The Eaton wildfire evacuation shelter near LA saw outbreaks of
norovirus, COVID, and flu, report reveals
July 10. 2026
Many of the evacuees needed to stay in a shelter, including some
of the about 1,800 people transported from assisted or skilled
nursing facilities. By January 13, 2025 reports emerged of
gastrointestinal illness, COVID-19, and flu in people staying at
the Eaton wildfire evacuation shelter, and these concerns were
filtered to the Pasadena Public Health Department (PPHD). To
contain possible outbreaks, public health staff recommended
bolstered monitoring and infection prevention and control (IPC)
efforts and the addition of several isolation areas.

So there were significant covid outbreaks occurring in 2025!?
I try to keep on top of this stuff... I live in an area that was
hit by hurricane and floods... I am surprised this type of
problem where viruses occur in shelters isn't addressed more. I
have been wearing a mask since covid began around 2020 so it
doesn't surprise me at all that this is happening in early 2025
(it is only now being reported in July 2026). I'd love to help
people in my community more but they don't take precautions such
as masking like me so it is a little frustrating to hear this is
happening in shelters it being reported over a year later in
studies...
I am glad it is being acknowledged now but it should have been
foreseen it was going to happen... it should have been
prevented... it needed to be acknowledged more while it was
happening as well. How about acknowledging they should have worn
masks while people started getting sick?!? Again I'd love to be
a team player and help my community more during times of stress
such as when it flooded during hurricane Hellene but they don't
take precautions such as masking so I tend to stay away from
churches and shelters. These are supervisors and staff members
who are spreading these viruses because they aren't masking and
taking precautions like they should!
When flooding occurred in my county I don't even need a study to
tell me all the people helping one another without masks on ..
all the shelters and churches handling long lines of stranded
people... as good as people are they weren't wearing masks and
protecting the elderly or anybody from these viruses. It scared
me.. Is it any wonder that it has been estimated in my state
that 1 in 6 North Carolinians has experienced Long COVID.
One in six North Carolinians has experienced Long COVID,
according to the Centers for Disease Control. People with Long
COVID have symptoms for four weeks or more, and they can last
for months or years. Even people who did not have severe
symptoms at first can develop Long COVID.
