Federal firefighters will be encouraged to wear N95 respirators
in major policy reversal
June 24, 2026
Although wildland firefighters are at high risk for
smoke-related health issues, the U.S. Forest Service has been
slow to offer protection. For decades, respirators weren’t
allowed.
For the first time, federal firefighters will be encouraged to
wear respirators to protect them against smoke-related hazards
as they work to put out wildland blazes.
The Forest Service announced Wednesday that firefighters were
authorized to use N95 respirators on the fire line, a major
policy reversal as the agency for decades did not allow such
protections, even as studies demonstrated the health harms of
wildfire smoke.

COMMENT:
What century do we live in!? Seriously firefighters haven't been
wearing n95 masks for many years now to protect themselves from
harmful smoke!? I have to ask what have they been smoking!? I
figured firefighters wore masks.. bless their poor hearts ..this
is nuts that they haven't been wearing masks. You mean to tell me
they just discovered Wildland firefighters have a higher risk of
lung cancer and cardiovascular disease!?
Man, talk about behind the times!.. I thought everybody knew
things on fire produced harmful smoke by now! I thought people
just knew those things. It's shocking to me..I just thought
everybody instinctively knows giant buring fires and massive
smoke is bad for the health. This study was long overdue.
Looky here, this is crazy a first responder be they a
firefighter, ambulance driver or police officer rushes onto a
scene where massive fire, smoke, ashes are pouring into the air
and they are there to help escort elderly, disabled people or
any age group for that matter in need; and these professionals
don't have masks on nor do they have masks to hand out in
emergency conditions!? Don't you wanna be able to at least hand
out some N95 masks when smoke is billowing in the air towards
helpless victims!? lol.. that's crazy to breathe in that stuff!
