According to the CDC, Vibrio naturally lives in coastal waters.
Most fall ill to it after eating raw or undercooked shellfish —
particularly oysters.
New York health officials report researchers discovered the
bacteria in multiple Long Island waterways.
In Florida, there have been nine confirmed cases of Vibrio
vulnificus — already surpassing the number reported this time
last year.
Mississippi health officials in Mississippi took to social media
to educate residents after a man remains in critical condition,
per the Sun Herald, with the flesh-eating bacteria after a
fishing trip.
The bacteria can cause an infection if a swimmer has an open
wound, such as recent cuts and scrapes, surgery sites, and
recent tattoos and piercings.
What are Vibrio symptoms?
Symptoms appear less than 24 hours after contact with the
bacteria. Additionally, the bacteria is fatal for 1 in 5 people.
Common signs include:
Stomach cramps,
Nausea,
Vomiting,
Watery diarrhea,
Fever,
Chills
