Cyclospora Outbreak 2026: Map, Foods to Avoid, States Most
Impacted as US Hits 22,000 Cases
A massive outbreak of the “explosive diarrhea parasite”
cyclospora has been linked to shredded lettuce. Where are cases
rising, and what are the other possible sources?

"Cases have been reported in 47 states so far...
Health officials are still racing to find the source or sources
behind the recent surge in cases of the foodborne illness...
It’s unclear which clusters of cases across the country may be
connected, officials have said. The U.S. Food and Drug
Administration is currently investigating six separate
cyclospora outbreaks, according to its foodborne illness
tracker.
The biggest one spans 15 states, including Michigan, Ohio,
Missouri, Illinois and Indiana, NBC News reported. It’s been
linked to shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell and
supplied by Taylor Farms from central Mexico. Taco Bell has
since removed all the implicated lettuce from its supply chain,
and Taylor Farms has issued a recall.
The FDA has not specified where the other five outbreaks are
located, nor any possible sources.
Public health officials are still looking into whether lettuce
may be driving cases in other parts of the country beyond those
15 states, as well as other possible sources. It’s not clear if
the new cases being reported are recent or from before the
Taylor Farms recall.
Food safety experts have said there are likely multiple sources
contributing to the cyclospora surge in the U.S. and that cases
could continue to rise through the end of August.
“There may be multiple unrelated outbreaks going on at the same
time,” Donald Schaffner, Ph.D., professor of food microbiology
in the Department of Food Science at Rutgers University, tells

Michigan health officials say people can resume regular
lettuce-eating habits as new cases of cyclosporiasis slow
New cases and related emergency department visits are declining,
officials say.

The recommendation to avoid bagged salad mixes is no longer in
effect, the department said.
"Residents may resume their usual food handling practices and
make choices based on their individual risk tolerance," the
release from MDHHS added.

COMMENT: So the Michigan health department is making a statement
that the people who were sickened ate during a window that has
already passed?...
... regardless, speaking for myself, Aint no way I'm gonna eat
a cold wet salad or take a chance on raw uncooked produce right
now! I'm going to continue to cook my vegetables for awhile!
There's nothing abnormal about cooking my food so its safe! I
don't eat raw stuff right now. I don't consume dirty water, raw
eggs or milk.. same goes for my raw produce for awhile. That's
why cooking, pasteurizing etc. was invented.
It was merely a day ago I got wind of Michigan reporting 710
more cases of cyclosporiasis in a single day on Aug. 5, 2026!
just yesterday they expanded this outbreak to 15 other states!
Cyclosporiasis just yesterday is being reported in like 47
states now practically overnight.
Supposedly there are also separate outbreaks of cyclosporiasis
not related to lettuce according to CDC, FDA, food safety
experts, and other public health officials...
Sorry I'm a rebel I'm cooking my produce until numbers stop
rising in other states as well... Thanks for the advice Michigan
Health expert but I prefer myself and others simply cook their
produce to be on the safe side for awhile just incase numbers of
cases continue to grow ...
Here's what I don't understand if Iceberg lettuce—specifically
shredded iceberg lettuce distributed by Taylor Farms de
Mexico—was pulled from shelves and restaurant lines in Michigan
on July 17, 2026 then why did we see a massive one day surge in
Michigan cases almost three weeks later? Michigan reported 710
more cases of cyclosporiasis in a single day on Aug. 5, 2026.
How is this possible people got sick almost three weeks later if
Iceberg lettuce—specifically shredded iceberg lettuce
distributed by Taylor Farms de Mexico—was pulled from shelves
and restaurant lines in Michigan on July 17, 2026? The
incubation period for this illness is usually a week to two
weeks. Perhaps there is something I am not understanding or some
lag in data or the incubation period is longer than health
experts thought or something? Maybe people waited 6 days before
going to doctors and the cyclosporiasis is over even though
there are more sources to investigate according to other health
officials?
get your story straight Michigan health officials as the numbers
grew in other states even as I type this ...

P.S. It was just yesterday I got this advice or message from
other food safety experts and public health officials:

Roche launches two new cyclospora tests as US outbreak widens

Roche (ROPC.S), opens new tab said on Thursday it launched two
new tests to detect cyclospora, as U.S. cyclosporiasis
​cases climbed to record levels this year ‌making
the foodborne-illness outbreak one of the largest in the
country's recent history.
The Swiss healthcare company is collaborating ​with its
subsidiary, TIB MOLBIOL, for supply ​of the tests.
"So far ​about 6,358 ⁠cases have been reported from
15 states with at least 278 hospitalizations, ​according
to the CDC and FDA. The ​agencies' ⁠surveillance,
however, lags state reporting by several weeks.,,"

neighboring Michigan, cases continue to rise around the state in
Indiana.
One county has surpassed 400 reports, according to the Indiana
Department of Health. Several other counties with high numbers
have now surpassed 100 cases.
"The Indiana Department of Health has not identified any
additional highly suspected food items for this outbreak outside
of the recalled lettuce, however, investigations are ongoing as
we continue to identify new cases,"

Diarrhea-causing disease hits double average cases in California

Reported cases of the parasitic disease cyclosporiasis are on
the rise in California...
In addition to those cases, multiple smaller cyclospora
outbreaks without a known source have been reported by the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration...
Dr. Monica Gandhi, an infectious disease expert at UC San
Francisco, said the news that cyclospora outbreaks are coming
from an unknown source is concerning.
“We still have really, really high numbers of cyclospora cases,
beyond that outbreak, that no one knows where they’re coming
from,” she told SFGATE. “That gives me concern that there are
other foods that are contaminated, that we just haven’t gotten
to the source of what’s the link between all these increased
cases.”

NC cyclospora cases increase as Taylor Farms sees another recall

A multi-state cyclosporiasis outbreak has resulted in over 6,300
cases and two deaths nationwide.
North Carolina has reported more than 850 cases of the
intestinal illness since May.
The illness is caused by a parasite found in contaminated food
or water, with symptoms including watery diarrhea.
The CDC has reported 6,358 cases, 278 hospitalizations and two
deaths associated with the outbreak, which is affecting multiple
states including North Carolina as of Aug. 5. The N.C.
Department of Health and Human Services has reported 867 cases
of cyclosporiasis within the state, including nearly 150 newly
reported cases between July 28 and Aug.
What foods carry cyclospora in North Carolina? Is Taco Bell
lettuce safe in North Carolina?
A previous N.C. DHHS news release from July 17 noted that, while
a recent increase in cyclosporiasis cases "does not appear to be
associated with the outbreak in other states involving Taco
Bell," certain foods including parsley, cilantro and lettuce
have been noted to be most linked to North Carolina cases.
Is cyclosporiasis contagious?
According to the CDC, cyclospora spreads when people eat food or
drink water that was contaminated with infected feces. As it
takes at least 1-2 weeks in the environment outside of the body
for cyclospora to become infectious after passing in a bowel
movement, direct person-to-person transmission of the parasite
is deemed "very unlikely."

CDC confirms Missouri is part of Cyclospora outbreak. How many
cases are there now?

Following the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
reporting that Missouri is a part of the multistate Cyclospora
outbreak, confirmed cases of the gastrointestinal illness
increased statewide. An update provided by the Missouri
Department of Health and Senior Services on Sunday, Aug. 9, said
Cyclospora cases in Missouri jumped from 1,095 cases, reported
Aug. 2, to 1,577 cases.
The data doesn’t include which counties have reported cases of
the illness causing watery diarrhea, vomiting and bloating due
to the Cyclospora parasite, and the Missouri DHSS has said it
won’t release county numbers due to confidentiality concerns.

The Kentucky Department for Public Health has received 735 cases
of cyclosporiasis as of Aug. 5, including 387 confirmed cases,
spokesperson Beth Fisher said. At least 30 people have been
hospitalized.

Nearly 1,900 cases of explosive diarrhea illness cyclosporiasis
reported in Indiana

The Indiana Department of Health announced on Tuesday that
approximately 1,893 cases of cyclosporiasis have been reported.
The true number of people who have fallen ill could be even
higher than that, officials said. Here is a breakdown of the
numbers:
1,065, or 56.3%, of cases are female
828, or 43.7%, of cases are male
Age range of cases is 0-98 years old
471 cases reported in Allen County
132 cases reported in Marion County
100+ cases in Kosciusko, Noble, DeKalb and Steuben counties
