Potential Long-Term Complications
Malabsorption: Persistent intestinal irritation can impair your
digestive tract's ability to absorb vital nutrients, leading to
prolonged weight loss and fatigue.
Reactive Arthritis: Some patients experience joint pain and
swelling (reactive arthritis) as a delayed immune reaction to
the parasitic infection.
Cholecystitis: The gallbladder can become inflamed, resulting in
sharp abdominal pain.
Kidney Injury: Severe, untreated diarrhea causes significant
fluid and electrolyte loss, posing risks for acute kidney
damage—particularly in the elderly or those with underlying
conditions.
COMMENT: I deem it only fair to state the possible long term
repercussions or complications that can occur because of
Cyclosporiasis. Complications and long term repercussions have
not really been mentioned in many articles.
For example, dehydration can put you on a kidney machine...bouts
of dehydration may eventually lead to kidney damage as well over
time which lead to kidney failure eventually ..just because
someone survives an initial bout of food bourn disease or other
illness, it doesn't automatically mean the patient gets off
scot-free of harm. Many illnesses , diseases, and viruses can
carry long term ramifications, repercussions, & consequences.
In many ways I find the possible complications of a disease or
illness far more threatening to me and more of a risk than
surviving the initial bout or initial infection of the illness.
Speaking for myself, That's the way I estimate true risk. When I
decide what measures to take insofar as precautions or defending
myself from a threat, personally, I include and weigh the
possibility of the long term consequences and repercussions.
Bouts of dehydration directly stress your kidneys and can indeed
lead to permanent damage. Cyclosporiasis causes severe
dehydration. Therefore Cyclosporiasis can indeed lead to
permanent kidney damage.
P.S.
It is also typically agreed upon by medical experts that besides
leading to kidney damage, bouts of dehydration are also the
primary cause of kidney stones and a contributing factor to
gallstones.
*additional Caveat:
Having cyclosporiasis does not make you immune, meaning you can
catch it again and again...
...Taking antibiotics over and over, and too often is
bad..."Frequent antibiotic use significantly increases the risk
of antimicrobial resistance, making future infections harder to
treat. It also severely disrupts the healthy bacteria in your
gut microbiome, which can lead to chronic issues like digestive
problems (such as C. difficile), weight gain, and weakened
immune responses."
...My preferred solution: My opinion it is wise and practical to
avoid catching this parasite by taking typical sanitation advice
as well as cooking produce at appropriate temperatures... That's
what I am choosing for me and my sense of wellbeing.

More than 18,000 cyclosporiasis cases reported across 45 states:

About 6,700 of those cases have been laboratory-confirmed, the
CDC says.

Cases of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness caused by a
parasite, have topped 18,000 in 45 states, according to updated
data Wednesday from the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC).
Since May 1, at least 6,707 cases have been
laboratory-confirmed, including 423 hospitalizations, the CDC
noted.
Additionally, the agency said it is "aware" of more than 11,500
additional cases that are not laboratory confirmed or require
further investigation and analysis.

More cases reported in cyclospora outbreak not linked to
lettuce: FDA data

While the cyclospora outbreak linked to lettuce has caused
thousands of cases of cyclosporiasis — and likely even more we
may never know about — another outbreak with an unknown cause
has increased, according to federal authorities.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration last week added this
separate outbreak to its ongoing foodborne illness
investigations.
The cyclosporiasis cases in this outbreak have not been linked
to the lettuce outbreak, and the FDA says it is still conducting
traceback efforts to identify the source. Meanwhile, an
additional 21 cases have been linked to the outbreak, bringing
the case count to 93.
There are still six active cyclospora outbreaks under
investigation. Three — sickening 18, eight, and two people,
respectively — are listed as ended. Only the lettuce-linked
outbreak has an identified source.
While U.S. officials have said that domestically acquired cases
of the “explosive” diarrhea-causing illness are linked to
produce, the source of an outbreak isn’t always identified.

COMMENT:
So I guess it mostly or likely depends on what state you are in.
For example, My state of North Carolina is considered
Not Linked to the so-called [i]Multistate Outbreak[/I] yet
Statewide, there are over 700 confirmed cases, making it one of
North Carolina's major active public health investigations...
"State health officials note that the illnesses in North
Carolina appear to be separate from a major multistate outbreak
in the Midwest that was linked to contaminated Mexican-grown
iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms."
By the way, State data currantly shows 2 cases in my county..

cyclosporiasis outbreak on Friday, up 387 from the previous day,

COMMENT: There's plenty of recipes that call for boiling,
steaming, baking, or sautéing produce for your safety...
...pictured below is just one way me, The Masked Man and Masked
Woman are preventing possibility of Cyclospora .. we are making
pickles and relish by canning cucumbers and some green pepper
and boiling them! Now I got pickles and I'm not in a pickle with
nor do I have to worry about explosive Cyclospora parasite in my
intestines! What a relief to not have to worry and wonder about
a stupid microscopic parasite in my produce or my bowels!

CDC expands largest known cyclosporiasis outbreak to 15 states,

Aug 4 (Reuters) - The U.S. CDC is adding six more states to the
ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce,
widening the number of affected states to 15, the Washington
‌Post reported on Tuesday, citing three individuals
familiar with the investigation.
An FDA investigation linked the outbreak that has expanded to
nine states to iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell restaurants
and sourced from privately held Taylor Farms operations in
central Mexico.
However, authorities are still ⁠looking for other
potential sources.

COMMENT:
I'm still boiling all my fresh produce... here's a photo of some
carrots getting ready to boil that we just peeled, sliced, and
chopped... I like my produced cooked to kill possible parasite
..even if carrots aren't on the Cyclosporiasis list, I'm still
boiling them! It makes me feel safer, gives me less to worry
about and tastes good to cook produce at least above 165
degrees Fahrenheit. I'll be picking up my produce again tomorrow
from Farmers Market & Women's Agricultural center. I just cook
it all to be on safe side. Makes me feel good and it just tastes
better that way.
I'm boiling, steaming, baking, and sautéing all my produce
anyway no matter what anybody says...
...I'm am pleased to report Masked Woman and Masked Man have had
no explosive diarrhea! No problem here eating warm soft cooked
vegetables,

'Sharp rise' in cyclosporiasis cases in UK linked to Mexico
travel.

Between April 30 and July 15, 67 cases have been reported among
some returning travelers in England, Wales and Scotland,
according to data published last week from the U.K. Health
Security Agency (UKHSA).
Comparatively, an annual average of 93 cases has been recorded
between 2022 and 2025, UKHSA data shows.

Michigan reports 710 more cases of cyclosporiasis in a single
day
Aug. 5, 2026,
Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported a
total of 12,218 cases of cyclosporiasis on Wednesday, Aug. 5, an
increase of 710 from yesterday's total.
The 6% increase marks one of the largest single-day recorded
spike in cases since the outbreak was first detected May 1.
