CDC, FDA, and public health officials in several states are
investigating a multistate outbreak of Cyclospora infections
linked to iceberg lettuce in 5 states.
Do not eat recalled iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico
that might be purchased from retail stores or served in
restaurants. If you purchased recalled lettuce, throw it out or
return it to the store. If you don't know the source of the
lettuce, ask the restaurant.
CDC is also investigating other outbreaks and illnesses of
cyclosporiasis nationally that are unrelated to this outbreak.

Iceberg lettuce eyed in parasite outbreak
The FDA is investigating iceberg lettuce supplied to Taco Bell
by Taylor Farms as a potential source for the cyclosporiasis
outbreak in five midwestern states. It's a parasite-borne
illness triggering severe cramps and diarrhea. NBC News' Anne
Thompson reports.July 16, 2026

NOTE: you might want to keep in mind:
This doesnt mean only Iceberg lettuce is the culprit.. we aren't
out of the woods quite yet...
"While shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de
Mexico has been officially linked to a large cluster of
Cyclospora infections across several states, health officials
are also investigating other potential sources because thousands
of reported illnesses are still unaccounted for."
..that might just be the tip of the iceberg.. we can't assume
all the cases are exclusively from iceberg lettuce quite yet.
(just a side note:..had a friend who had the knack for making up
nicknames for established businesses and he used to call Taco
Bell: "Taco Hell" ::) )

North Carolina is reporting 561 cases of cyclosporiasis as of
July 20, 2026, but the cause of the state’s growing outbreak
remains a mystery.
July 21, 2026
Dr. Carl Williams, state public health veterinarian for the N.C.
Department of Health and Human Services, told reporters Tuesday
that while some states were able to identify lettuce as the
source for a significant proportion of cases, in North Carolina
the outbreak may be caused by several sources.
“Our thought is that it’s likely that there are multiple
vehicles for cyclosporiasis. It’s not a single source or a
single food product from a single company,” said Williams.

COMMENT:
This article clearly states that for North Carolina, "It’s not a
single source or a single food product from a single company"
Furherthermore,
"Williams says cases tend to increase in the summer months when
more people are enjoying more fresh fruits and vegetables.
Cyclosporiasis, like many foodborne illnesses, can be prevented
by cooking foods to 165 degrees Fahrenheit."
“If you cook it, you’ll kill it. But most people don’t want to
cook their fresh fruits and vegetables,” said Williams.
...That's precisely what Masked Man has been doing the last
couple weeks .. we have been cooking our produce from the weekly
Farmers Market produce we pick up from women's agricultural
center. I am happy to say I am symptom free and it's now been
two weeks since I consumed any raw produce here in North
Carolina(or anywhere) so its safe to say my loved one and I
should in the clear and safe.
We will continue simply eating only cooked veggies and
cooked/baked fruit. Its not that hard to cook produce in fact it
is quite tasty and I prefer them cooked! Last week we got beets,
sweet potatoes, potatoes , tomatoes , baby tomatoes , onions,
cucumbers , yellow squash , mushrooms, & carrots...(fruit can br
cooked and can even be put unto pies or turned into a jam
spread! mmmnnn!) ...all of this produce tastes great cooked up!
It just so happens taking precautions such as cooking vegetables
is the easiest and tastiest precaution to take ever!
I don't miss the cold wet salad whatsoever. I can't complain
about this cooking precaution: turning potatoes into French
fries, or using tomatoes in homemade chili, stir-fry with no raw
vegetable ingredients is good, or simply eating warm soft
carrots, squash, and heated onions and mushrooms next to your
steak! Try cooking peaches with little cinnamon, sugar and
starch... mmmnnn Believe me I much prefer cooking my produce
than living in fear all week & every week wondering about
consuming a microscopic parasite and dealing with dehydration,
diarrhea, and doctors! Cooking is hardly a precaution and it is
more like a preference and privilege to eat cooked veggies to
me!

States
Jul 22, 2026
More than 11,500 cases of cyclosporiasis have been reported in
41 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) on Wednesday (July 22). The CDC states that at
least 4,173 cases are laboratory-confirmed, with 308
hospitalizations, and an additional 7,400 cases under
investigation. Many of these have been reported by Michigan and
Ohio, marking one of the largest outbreaks of this foodborne
parasite in recent U.S. history

SUMMARY - The link below has an editorial that is pretty damning
and technical about this entire outbreak situation. A summary
wouldn't do the editorial justice but, suffice it to say, this
situation is what happens when you gut governmental protections
that would have prevented or greatly reduced the impact of this
outbreak.

Cyclosporiasis outbreak expands to 9 states
Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania are now part of a
multistate outbreak of the severe stomach illness, with nearly
2,000 cases now confirmed by the CDC.
July 24, 2026
"Iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms is unlikely to be the only
product making people sick."
"Hundreds of other cases have been reported in states not linked
so far to the multistate outbreaks.
Preliminary investigations into North Carolina’s outbreak
suggest parsley and cilantro could be behind those cases.
The FDA’s Irvin said the agency has seen different “signals” of
outbreak sources. “We have multiple investigations of cyclospora
open,” she said?

CDC Added Four States on Friday. The Cyclospora Outbreak Is
1,947 People. The States Report 15,500 Sick. Marler Clark

July 25, 2026
"...Pennsylvania’s 28 deserves a footnote. Cyclosporiasis is not
a reportable condition there; physicians report voluntarily, a
fact CDC prints on its own surveillance page. That number
measures how many doctors chose to file, not how many
Pennsylvanians got sick...
..Its outbreak page says it is also investigating other
Cyclospora outbreaks nationally that are unrelated to this one.
FDA’s tracker carries six Cyclospora investigations, four of
them open.
Here is the nine-state outbreak, as the states themselves count
it:..."

Cyclospora outbreak grows as FDA seeks source, Michigan cases
climb
July 27, 2026
"Michigan case numbers continue to escalate as the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) is still searching for the sources of what
are now multiple outbreaks after claiming a false-positive test
result on Taylor Farms’ lettuce...
...on July 19, the FDA walked back on its findings, claiming
that it was a false positive test result.
However, Taylor Farms’ recall still stands, and the traceback of
thousands of cases to that lettuce still stands, which is based
on epidemiological information collected by the CDC...
“The issuing of a recall, and then the clarification that they
had a false positive, and then the clarification that the
epidemiological evidence still points to this bagged lettuce
product from this manufacturer — it's just been very confusing,
and it's been very difficult to figure out what to message to
our community.”

COMMENT: Sounds like the process of investigation is far from
over and we have much to learn. It also sounds as if it is a
challenge to pinpoint source. Regardless cases of Cyclospora
appears to be continuing to climb.
It is appearing that these current USA outbreaks of Cyclospora
are "not exclusively linked to iceberg lettuce. While the
largest multistate outbreak has been traced to shredded iceberg
lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico, health officials are
investigating multiple, potentially unrelated outbreaks and food
sources."
P.S.
the article also cites some details of what we do know from
historical and past findings about USA cyclosporiasis outbreaks
that have occurred:
"Fruits and veggies tied to past cyclosporiasis outbreaks in the
U.S. include bagged salads and salad mixes, basil, cilantro,
parsley, mesclun lettuce, raspberries, snow peas and sweet peas.
Barna and D’Souza echoed that one may want to take extra
precautions if in a vulnerable group, such as immunocompromised
or pregnant. Individuals may want to opt for frozen or canned
produce rather than fresh or pre-packaged. The only sure-fire
way to completely kill the parasite is to cook your food to at
least 158°F."
