‘Explosive’ diarrhea illness uptick reported in Texas, 16 other
states (cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness)

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - U.S. health officials are tracking a
seasonal spike in cases of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness
that can cause “explosive” diarrhea, among other symptoms.
The spike in cases occurs when people eat contaminated food or
drink contaminated water. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC)
says no one fully knows how the cyclospora parasite gets into
food and water, and that people should take care to follow safe
food handling practices to avoid contamination.

Explosive diarrhea? Why cyclosporiasis may not be to blame
Michigan residents have been warned this week to wash their
hands and raw produce as state officials battle an outbreak of
the diarrheal illness, cyclosporiasis, which is transmitted via
contaminated food or drink.
More than 225 cases of cyclosporiasis, caused by a microscopic
parasite called cyclospora cayatenensis, were confirmed in 21
Michigan counties between June 22 and July 1, Lynn Sutfin, a
spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Health and Human
Services said earlier this week.
More people are expected to get sick in Michigan, health
officials said, and the source of the outbreak hasn't been
confirmed. Dozens of people in other states also have contracted
the parasite.
Cyclosporiasis is treatable with antibiotics...
On July 1, the MDHHS suggested ways to avoid the illness by
thoroughly washing your hands, fruit and vegetables because the
parasite is transmitted via ingesting food and drink
contaminated with feces...

Fourth of July Update on huge upward spike in Cyclospora cases
in Michigan...
Cyclospora skyrockets in Michigan
In a follow-up on the cyclosporiasis outbreak in Michigan, the
Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) reports
the number of reported cases has risen to 572 as of Saturday,
July 4, up from 170 on Tuesday, June 30, with the largest
increase occurring in Southeast Michigan- Monroe, Lenawee,
Washtenaw, Wayne, Shiawassee, Jackson, Oakland and Livingston
counties.
Health officials say as of July 4, 2026, no specific produce
grower/supplier, or specific produce type has been identified as
the source of the outbreak.

MDHHS recommends that entities in Southeast Michigan who are
preparing, processing, or serving raw produce, including
restaurants and other commercial kitchens, take the following

There have been 23 reported cases of a parasitic illness in
Louisiana that can produce severe symptoms, including
“explosive” diarrhea, according to the Louisiana Department of
Health (LDH).

COMMENT: I wanted to include this article because of the
following quote in it:
“I do want to caution that in this case the CDC and FDA indicate
that washing may not fully remove this parasite, but it helps,
and it makes a difference, and it’s critical,” Fischer said.
“And when we talk about foodborne illnesses, we know it makes a
huge difference across the spectrum.”
...Masked Man is a huge consumer of locally grown produce from
local farmers Market.. to feel even more safe after washing my
veggies and fruits, perhaps I will make it a game of finding
recipes that require cooked vegetables...I'll incorporate cooked
and baked vegetables and fruits into my diet for awhile.
Might as well expand my horizons I'm finding lots of recipes
that require cooked and baked veggies and fruits! ..good time to
put the apron on, heat up the oven, and learn some new recipes
and bypass the raw salads for awhile! Anything is better than
explosive diarrhea!! Just gotta take advantage of online baking
and cooking recipes; if there was ever a time to learn how to
bake now would be the time!
I'm sure others will think me a fool or think I'm going
overboard on this..perhaps I am ...Maybe for others this seems
extreme to skip the raw salads for awhile but I like homemade
stews, stir-fry, and and warm soft potatoes & carrots and such..
might as well bake and eat some warm veggies and make jams and
stuff out of fruits.
I feel like I'm being clever animal, shrewd, and strategic at a
time a portion of produce might be dangerous to consume raw..I
don't feel scared or feel like I'm behaving erratically. I just
feel I might as well take advantage and be on the safe side and
modify my diet to include new tasty dishes! MMnnnnn! These new
tasty baked veggie recipes certainly aren't going to hurt when I
wolf them down!
We'll just take a back seat for a month and not eat raw
vegetables, w'ell cook em! I'll volunteer to forego the cold wet
salad and instead risk losing a few nutrients and eat warm hot
steaming veggies instead! I'll suffer and miss out a little
wait and see if washing fully removes this parasite or not for
the others who will eat the cold wet sand..why should I test it
out!? Let them eat it raw .. I'm sure there will plenty of
people out there to test it out for me. I'll do that for four
weeks and revaluate every four weeks until I'm sure the parasite
stops spreading according to data.
For what its worth I microwaved my dog food when there was some
worry about bad pet food being distributed and fido seems to
appreciate warm food now and is still here amongst us nice and
healthy.. there was no adequate warnings to the public that
'long covid' could occur...and every time the pandemic got
declared over I wore a mask anyway for an extra periods of time
while others didn't and they caught covid so I'll simply keep
doing what I always do with any health scares or food scares: I
take extra-precautions for periods of times , check data and
then determine later if I need to keep taking precautions or
not. That's how I use maps and charts and graphs and make
decisions about what to do in life. To me taking precautions is
like choosing which clothes to wear for certain jobs...to me
taking precautions such as masking in public is just like
putting clothes on and being fit for whatever is coming along.
Chameleons can change colors to survive I think it easy to adapt
and make a few temporary creative changes in how I consume my
produce!.. this will be a fun rewarding challenge,

P.S. Regardless, Ive never experienced this parasite causing
this much damage across this many states at this rate of speed
that I can remember. It is definitely alarming and something to
be concerned about. Its definitely a little spooky ..most of us
already are washing our vegetables.. what happened all in a
sudden people stopped washing their veggies or something!?
That's doubtful.. sounds like a parasite .. does it really wash
off?..do we really know enough about this ? Is it too soon to
tell if its going to get worse and continue to spread? When is
the last time something like this happened to produce across so
many states at once? Maybe there are other 55 year old that can
remember when so much produce across this many states posed a
threat to us.. I can't recall anything of this proportion
occuring.. there was a food lion meat scare I remember...I'm 55
years old and I sort of remember localized food scares and
tainted medicine scares across a few stores when I was a kid in
school but this parasite does seem kind of novel to me. I
certainly look forward to learning more about it rather than
learning from it.

This is why cyclosporiasis outbreaks are almost exclusively
linked to raw produce like fresh raspberries, basil, cilantro,
and leafy greens..."

COMMENT: So there are several articles about the several recent
outbreaks of Cyclospora. Most articles erroneously just act like
all ya have to do is wash the vegetables and not worry. This is
the only article that really tells people that if you really
want to be safe you can heat up your vegetables, I fail to
understand why health departments in most other articles fail to
mention that washing vegetables will not protect you from this
parasite and that this parasite's oocysts are incredibly
resilient and have features that make them uniquely equipped to
survive both environmental stress and our best attempts to clean
them off our food.
So why aren't most of the articles suggesting people heat up
their vegetables if they are concerned about Cyclospora!? Some
of us live close enough to where these outbreaks are occurring
to be concerned. Evidently it takes more than just washing off
the produce to be really safe from Cyclospora. People have a
right to know this so they can choose what to do for themselves
Once people are truly informed about how only heat kills
Cyclospora then they can decide whether they want to eat raw
produce or cook their produce during Cyclospora outbreaks.

NOTE:
On average it takes a week after consuming/getting
cyclosporiasis for symptoms to show up.
COMMENT:
For whatever it is worth, Ive been eating Farmers Market locally
grown North Carolina salads everyday all last week and had some
cherry tomatoes and raw snap peas and some cabbage Wednesday on
the 8th... From now on I'm cooking/heating all vegetables till
we find more about this.. so far I'm okay but Ive got half a
week to a week more until I'm sure ..yikes microscopic parasites
that really don't wash off raw produce are scary.
So I actually discovered this report of cyclosporiasis outbreak
happening before the 1st of July but I just thought and was led
to believe by several articles so long as you wash vegetables
everything will be okay.. further research indicates only
heat/boiling kills cyclosporiasis.. Now I gotta wonder in the
back of my mind for half a week to a week if this parasite got
me...
,,,so if I do get sick at least I will know right away what it
is and be able to get treatment right away ...its good to know
if I do come down with symptoms that I have noted when I last
ate raw produce and where it could come from and I will be able
to inform when seeking medical treatment what is going on and be
prescribed antibiotics... I won't know for sure until a week or
so passes. I wear a mask so that rules out other things like
contagious viruses that may cause explosive diarrhea if indeed I
did consume /get the parasite... So I am safer for knowing about
this outbreak and hopefully I don't have it anyway... we shall
see after a week or so!
Its nice having a plan of action if I get sick (antibiotics)
incase I somehow got the parasite the last few days ago and at
same time it's nice having a plan of prevention (heating raw
produce) so I don't have to worry about getting it later if the
outbreak continues to spread. Its truly wonderful to be informed
of outbreaks of this nature so we know exactly what to do and
what is going on.. Imagine not knowing what is wrong with you!
Much better to know!
I also am a caregiver of a loved one that may simply refuse to
forego raw vegetables..I'm only eating heated produce but I
might not be able to convince my loved one... While Ive gotten
her to mask in public and outside, I may not be successful
convincing her to cook all the produce...she may simply insist
on eating raw lettuce and salad.. so if she gets sick, I'll be
able to know what to tell the doctor right away and get her
treatment right away! Gotta cut my losses I'm grateful she masks
to prevent serious airborne illness with me.. she's been
informed about cyclosporiasis outbreak and all I can do is see
if she'll follow my lead when I cook our produce and request
cooked produce. She knows what I prefer. It's hard being a
caregiver. I hope she will see things my way with making the
produce she's gonna eat safer by heating it. Of course once that
explosive diarrhea hits and a masked trip to get antibiotics
will change her tune!
So yeah this forum about viruses and data is extremely
valuable.. I'll know just what to do. I'm not left in the dark
about the latest challenges with viruses and outbreaks and I
don't have to worry so much because I'm so well informed.
