severe stomach illness in Shenandoah National Park, it's
important for hikers to know how to stay safe.

Getting sick or injured in the wilderness is never a good thing
because of the innate inability of accessing critical help in a
timely manner.
The emphasis on carrying weight during hiking (the article
mentioned boiling water and filters and that they add weight to
a hiker's backpack) is real but having the ability to safely
filter water of contaminants is more important. Perhaps hikers
will have to adapt to a new reality that they can't trust water
with traditional filtering methods.
Hopefully, this is an isolated incident and not the start of an
emerging trend. Thank you for the article.
