LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – Videos and posts about a disease known
as “bobcat fever” have been spreading across social media,
prompting concerns among cat owners about the potentially deadly
illness.
Jun 13, 2026
Bobcat fever, formally known as cytauxzoonosis, is caused by the
parasite Cytauxzoon felis. The parasite is commonly found in
bobcats and is spread after a tick – most often, the lone star
tick – bites them and then another animal. The same tick, which
has been spreading in the U.S., can also make humans sick or
even allergic to meat.
While bobcats may be asymptomatic, domestic cats can become
seriously ill, according to VCA Animal Hospitals. Outdoor cats,
particularly those living near wooded areas, face the greatest
risk,
“One day [your cat] might be hiding, then the next day they’re
not eating, and by that third day they’re really, really sick,”
Champagne said. “That’s why it’s so scary.”
The disease is often fatal, according to VCA Animal Hospitals.
