Coccidioidomycosis, or valley fever, may be underdiagnosed
initially in central California, according to new research

Study: Valley Fever Underdiagnosed in Central California
In a retrospective chart review of 62 patients at a Fresno
safety-net hospital diagnosed with coccidioidomycosis, some 60%
had prior healthcare encounters, including in outpatient and
urgent care, where the fungus was not considered or tested for.
Study results were presented in a poster (abstract
HEALTH-FRI-177).
“The problem is that almost 15-30% of what we call
community-acquired pneumonia is actually from
coccidioidomycosis, but it resembles viral or bacterial
infection so commonly that it gets misdiagnosed"
