Three Canadians now in isolation.
"Three Canadians with connections to a deadly
hantavirus-stricken cruise are self-isolating at home in Ontario
and Quebec, the federal government says.
Two Canadian passengers disembarked on the remote South Atlantic
island of St. Helena almost two weeks ago, according to
Dutch-based Oceanwide Expeditions. Foreign Affairs Minister
Anita Anand said they were on the same returning flight as a
third Canadian who was not on the vessel."

The notes from my Friday virus update video.
MV Hondius Hantavirus Outbreak Update as of 12pm Friday May 8th,
2026.
As Of Friday morning May 8th there have been 3 reported deaths
with the outbreak only 1 of them are confirmed as Hantavirus at
this time. The World Health Organisation reports eight suspected
cases and five confirmed cases. On 8 May, the UK Health and
Safety Agency reported one additional suspected case, and two
Britons being confirmed infected. Two Singaporean men aged in
their 60s were tested negative. There are symptomatic patients
in five countries, with confirmed cases in South Africa and
Switzerland and unconfirmed cases in Saint Helena, the
Netherlands, Spain, and France. This excludes the airlifted
patients, who have tested positive and are being treated in
Germany and the Netherlands. In the United Kingdom, the United
States, and Canada, some people may have been in proximity to
cases but are not showing symptoms
26 passengers got off the ship before this was declared an
outbreak 13 or 14 days ago.
7 of them have come to the United States since then. Arizona,
California, Georgia, Texas, and Virginia.
Spanish authorities on Friday were preparing to receive more
than 140 passengers and crew members on board a
hantavirus-stricken cruise ship headed for the Canary Islands,
where health officials have said they will perform careful
evacuations. The vessel is expected to reach the Spanish island
of Tenerife, off the coast of West Africa, on Saturday or
Sunday. None of the remaining passengers or crew on the ship is
currently symptomatic, the Netherlands-based Oceanwide
Expeditions cruise ship company said Thursday.
where did the Hantavirus outbreak come from? This outbreak may
have come from Argentina during a bird watching trip.
Officials have found evidence of Andes virus, a version of
hantavirus found in South America. This strain can have human to
human transmission.
Hantavirus infections are relatively uncommon globally. The WHO
reported that in 2025, eight countries within the Americas had
documented 229 cases and 59 deaths.
Could this be the next big pandemic? No, however more confirmed
and suspected cases could happen as the incubation period is 6
to 8 weeks with Hantavirus. This means anyone who had close
contact with someone who was infected or has not yet shown
symptoms but later does could still become sick. This includes
any close contacts during travel. If the outbreak is not
properly handled it could become prolonged with more cases and
suspected cases. We will likely be talking about this outbreak
for several more weeks thanks to the long incubation period.
It is important to note that Hantavirus is not as transmissible
as Covid or Measles.
