NOTE - I know that there has already been at least one
foot-and-mouth disease article for 2026 but, for all future
foot-and-mouth events that occur worldwide and in 2026, please
place those articles here in order for viewers to have an easy

SUMMARY - An outbreak of foot-and-mouth (also known as
hoof-and-mouth) disease has spread to 11 farms on the island
nation of Cyprus, triggering a mass vaccination event in order
to spread. 13,000 farm animals have already been killed.

4 February 2026: Outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease in Botswana
Updated 25 February 2026
Botswana has notified WOAH of an outbreak of foot and mouth
disease in a herd of cattle confirmed on 29 January 2025: WAHIS.
The outbreak is in Zone 6b of Botswana, from which imports of
fresh bovine meat are not permitted (due to an earlier outbreak
of FMD in 2022) – see entry BW-6 in the list of countries
approved to export fresh meat of ungulates to Great Britain.
Further suspicions of disease have now also been reported in
Zone 3c.
OVS note 2026/02 was issued on 30 January 2026, notifying of the
FMD outbreak and requesting that consignments of fresh bovine
meat and animal by-products that have not undergone a form of
risk-mitigating treatment be held.

(FMD) outbreaks and the slaughter of 128 925 cattle, the Gauteng
Department of Agriculture MEC, Vuyiswa Ramokgopa, has not made
public a comprehensive and structured action plan to contain the

Gauteng FMD outbreak affects over 261,000 livestock

JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Gauteng
Agriculture MEC Vuyiswa Ramokgopa have outlined interventions to
contain the ongoing livestock disease outbreak in the province.

Outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Greece

Greece have notified WOAH of an outbreak of FMD on the island of
Lesvos, which was confirmed on 16 March 2026 (WAHIS).
following a recent outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in
Greece, commercial imports of commodities from FMD-susceptible
animals from the whole territory of Greece are suspended:
live (including non-domestic) ruminant and porcine animals,
including wild game, and their germplasm
fresh meat from ruminant and porcine animals (including
chilled and frozen), including wild game
meat products from ruminant and porcine animals (including
wild game) that have not been subject to heat treatment D1, D, C
or B as defined in Annex 1
milk, colostrum and their products, unless subjected to
treatment as defined in Article 4 of Commission Regulation (EU)
Regulation 605/2010 (see Annex 1)
certain animal by-products derived from FMD-susceptible
animals (a full list of which is provided in Annex 2), including
untreated wool and hair
casings derived from FMD-susceptible species
hay and straw
