COVID-19 levels run high in Bay Area wastewater, prompting calls
for precautions

Public health officials and infectious disease experts are
urging Bay Area residents to take added precautions against
COVID-19 as wastewater testing shows high concentrations of the
virus in parts of the region.
Measurements at wastewater treatment plants in Santa Clara
County and San Francisco have shown high concentrations of the
virus over the past three weeks, while concentrations have
reached medium levels on the Peninsula and in the North Bay.
Wastewater testing serves as a proxy for the virus’s spread
because it does not depend on people seeking tests or reporting
their results.
“High levels of COVID in the wastewater mean that each person is
encouraged to take extra precautions to keep from getting sick
and to help slow the spread of COVID, especially when so many
people are traveling for summer,” a Santa Clara County Public
Health Department spokesperson said in a statement.
Officials recommended wearing masks in crowded indoor settings,
staying current on vaccinations, testing for the virus and
remaining home when sick.

COVID-19 infections are trending upward across much of the
United States for the first time since spring, according to the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's latest epidemic
modeling.

COMMENT:
Yeah, these facts constitute a US covid outbreak.
I have to say there is almost a reluctance in society to
acknowledge and even use the word outbreak with covid. Yet we
are in a covid outbreak "with COVID Growing in 37 States with
None Declining".
Covid remains extremely dangerous according to many studies.
Long covid and the long term repercussions of covid wreak havoc
and long term suffering amongst many.

COVID-19 cases surge to epidemic levels: CDC

Taiwan last week reported 4,766 new COVID-19 cases, five deaths
and 25 patients with severe symptoms, reaching the benchmark of
an epidemic, health officials said yesterday.
The figure represented an increase of 66.5 percent over the
previous week, Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Epidemic
Intelligence Center Director Guo Hung-wei
(郭宏偉) told a routine news conference in
Taipei.

California COVlD Wave, Day 58
August 10, 2026
Levels are "Very High" in Fresno, per CDC wastewater data; we
estimate 1 in 20 residents are actively infectious.
Another 8 counties have CDC "High" levels including Alameda. In
the High counties, about 1 in 35 residents are estimated
actively infectious, with slight variation by county, e.g., 1 in
38 in Alameda.

Hospitals report 72 severe COVID-19 cases
EASING: The growth rate of COVID-19 cases slowed from the
74.8 percent increase in the previous week, indicating the
current wave of infections is nearing its peak

Seventy-two severe cases of COVID-19 and 14 deaths related
to the disease were confirmed last week, the highest weekly
numbers this year, as hospital visits for COVID-19 also
increased by 27.6 percent from the previous week, the Centers
for Disease Control (CDC) said yesterday.
The centers also reported that influenza activity is
gradually increasing, and might enter an epidemic period later
this month

Taiwan recorded 14 COVID-19 deaths and 72 severe cases during
the last seven days, the highest weekly toll during the current
wave, local media reported on Tuesday, citing health
authorities.
Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Epidemic Intelligence
Center Deputy Director Lee Chia-lin said that since October last
year, Taiwan has recorded 337 domestic COVID-19 cases involving
severe complications, including 42 deaths, according to the
Focus Taiwan website.
COVID-19-related outpatient and emergency-room visits also
increased, reaching 24,645 between Aug. 2 and 8, up 27.6% from
the previous week.

Map Details:
The US has at least 40 states and territories with COVlD
outbreaks. These include Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas,
California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia,
Guam, Hawai'i, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky,
Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana,
Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North
Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico,
South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, the U.S. Virgin Islands,
Utah, Virginia, Washington, and West Virginia.
Levels on the Big Island of Hawai’i are particularly high. Note
also, the NYC area is seeing outbreaks.
There are likely outbreaks in additional states. The summary
statistic of 40 only includes counties with observed data,
rather than estimated data. For example, Idaho, Louisiana,
Maryland, and Tennessee likely have outbreaks, but monitoring is
poor.

COMMENT /& LONG COVID CAVEAT: that's "3.8 million cases per
week" Not that rates will necessarily continue at this rate
however they could depending on variants every season... and
Theoretically, at a steady transmission rate of 3.8 million
cases per week, it would take just under 2 years for a total
number of cases to equal the entire population of the country
(assuming re-infections).
Imagine possibly a new variant every season, four times a year,
thrown into the mix.
Moreover there are also the long term repercussions namely what
we term Long Covid .. keep in mind there are already many
studies accumulating over just the last few years that have
verified and confirmed that covid carries serious long term
health repercussions and for as many problems we already have
because of long covid we still don't know what catching covid
once, multiple times and whether it be considered a mild case or
long covid will do to us beyond 6 years from now.. We don't know
what having caught covid will do to a person 10 and 20 years and
the years beyond that down the road quite yet. As with many
diseases that have proved to carry long term repercussions,
there may be many dormant problems from covid that might give
rise and show up with dire consequences and complications in
later stages of life. We haven't crossed that time frame as of
yet to know that.
