       The Dance Scene (POLL)
By: Fawkes Date: September 22, 2011, 1:52 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Who else loved it? I think it gets a lot of hate because people
think that they were building romantic tension between Harry and
Hermione and ignoring the Ron/Hermione romance. However, I
think it's the opposite. I think the Ron/Hermione romance is
made really obvious throughout the whole series (well, end of
COS onwards at least...in the books it wasn't til GOF) and it's
also shown very obviously in DH1. I didn't think the dance was
romantic, or had any sexual tension. I thought it was really
cute, and seemed like the kind of dance I'd do to cheer a friend
       up.
Either way, it always puts a smile on my face.

I don't like it, but not because I thought it implied anything
       between Harry and Hermione.
       1. It was extremely, extremely out of character. Harry dumped
Ron's blanket on Hermione and basically left her to cry on her
own. He really made no real attempt to make her feel better, let
       alone dancing with her.
       2. It seemed overly long and overindulgent — what got cut so
that something that pointless could be included?
       3. It felt like throwing Harmonians a bone. Like I said, I
didn't get anything romantic out of it, but it was almost like
they were saying, "Sorry your ship didn't work out, Harmonians.
Have this as a consolation prize."
       4. It was pointless. Nothing changed afterward, it didn't move
anything along or affect anything character-wise.

I somehow agree with both of you. Yes it's pretty pointless, but
it is sweet as it shows that Harry is just trying to cheer her
up and that their really close friends.
It's OOC for book-Harry, but movie-Harry has always been
       different

People think it was building romantic tension between Harry and
Hermione because we were TOLD there was romantic tension between
them in that scene. If Yates/Heyman/Kloves hadn't said anything
about that scene, I think it would have been viewed differently
for most. But how many times did we hear about the "relationship
that could have been more" or how Kloves told Rowling he just
knew something was going to happen between H/H after Ron left.
Even Dan said that that scene is the one scene in the series
where you go "wait...are they about to....oh, no they're not".
So, yeah. I don't like it. They should have taken the dance
scene out and added in the taboo scene, in my opinion.

That's a good point, too. It's hard to buy it as a platonic
sweet moment between friends when publicity keeps saying it's a
       "romantic" gesture of some kind.
The taboo explanation is also a perfect example of something
USEFUL that was cut even though that dance scene was kept. Turg.

I love it. Mostly because the song is so good and their dancing
was so cute. The fact that Harry was just trying to cheer
Hermione up was really touching to me. It was an escape moment
       for them.
Nothing changed at the end, but I thought it sort of emphasised
how much their situation sucked when the music stopped and they
became all depressed again. I almost feel that without it, the
audience would have become desensitised to their situation and
their depression because there was just so much of it. To see
that 30 seconds of joy was heartwarming and then to see them go
back to being depressed was really sad.

I liked it for reasons I've said that I've said probably a
       hundred times on IMDb 8)
Just to put it shortly though - I liked it because I saw it as a
sort of escape for both of them. Just 2 kids thrown into a
seemingly hopeless war. They're isolated and probably felt alone
in the world, and all they had was each other at that moment.
OOC? Sure. I won't kid myself by trying to convince others that
it was completely in character because I can't really agree with
that either. That said, I will agree that the scene is
'pointless' and that there could of been another scene used in
lieu of it. But I don't mind it. Like Fawkes, it does put a big
       smile on my face.
And I learned a long time ago to view the movies and books
differently, otherwise I'd never enjoy the movies. I get more
out of liking the movies for what they are than hating the
movies for what they could of been.

No, I hate it because it built tension between Harry and
Hermione (mostly from Harry's part) while ignoring the
Harry/Ginny romance, which was already shit on and ruined beyond
all measure before hand. It may have been originally intented as
two friends fucking around just to ease the tension of their
crappy camping trip (the script certainly seems to indicate
this), but this romantic angle was put in and built up and I
       hate it.
That and it's completely unecessary. I always skip that bit and
the film never ends up lacking. If I could figure out a way to
cut it out of my DVD all together, I would.

I'm a fan of the dance scene. I liked it when I saw it in
theaters. I thought it was cute. Yes it's slightly out of
character for Harry, but like others have said, Harry is much
different in the movies than in the books.
I think what I liked about it was that it was relatable. And
kind of bittersweet and tragic. For a few minutes they lose
themselves and act like goofy teenagers, forgetting about the
fact that they're both alone in the world.
And yes, there is that romantic implication, but once Harry
started dancing like a doofus, I disregarded that. The part when
he takes the locket off Hermione is very charged. You see
Hermione breathe in sharply and look all confused. It was
basically the entire audiences' reaction playing out on her
face. And you're like, "WTF?" But then they start dancing and
everyone laughs with relief. I liked that. I felt like it was a
fun little trick they all played on us.
And honestly, "what if?" had to cross their minds. Because
they're 17 alone in a tent. That's natural. And nothing
happened, so I don't know why people get so worked up (except
for the fact that it does very much diminish Harry's feelings
for Ginny. He shouldn't have looked so disappointed. Or they
should have at least included him looking at Ginny's name on the
       map a few times).
I will agree that it is kind of pointless. That they could have
had much more important scenes included instead of this. But
this character moment is a perfect example of what I love about
       Part 1.
Anyway, I will say that I wasn't a huge proponent of the scene
at first. I simply liked it. But the more hate it got on IMDb,
the more I felt a need to defend it and the more I liked it. In
a weird/sick way. This is honestly probably the millionth time
       I've talked about it.
PS: I almost feel like we should have a poll on this...
