Casting Spells

OK, this took a while to figure out, and I think the
instructions for it on the site are confusing.
Eventually, you'll get to the point where you'll be asked to
"cast a spell." Alohamora (unlocking) is the first one you can
try, to open the third-floor corridor door. It's Chapter 9,
Moment 3 (The Forbidden Corridor).
For each spell, you're given a set of letters and a shape. The
"shape" will help you remember in what order to click the
letters. Not every letter in the spell's name will be used.
Using Alohamora as an example, the letters you're given are A,
O, H, M, A. The spell's full name will be shown, and the "hot"
letters will be in red. The first letter of the spell (A, in
this case) will always be used.
1. Hit the A key, or click on the letter.
2. You'll see a circle appear around the letter. When you think
the circle looks big (before it collapses again), hit the A key
AGAIN.
3. Once you've done that, a jet of light will fly to the next
letter. As soon as it touches the letter, type it (in this case,
O). Another circle will appear, and again, type the letter again
when the circle is big.
4. The light will move to the next letter (in this case, H).
When it does, hit the letter once, then again when the circle is
biggest.
5. Keep doing this until you finish the spell.
Some notes:
1. The light will always "move" in the direction of the shape
you're given.
2. The letters will always be in the order they appear in the
writing out of the spell's name (i.e. M won't be before H in
Alohamora).
3. The spell letters will collapse (fail) if you mistype a
letter.
4. You hit each letter TWICE, once to activate the circle and
once when the circle looks biggest. The spell won't "start"
until you hit the first letter.
5. If you wait too long to hit the next letter, the spell will
fail.
6. For each practice spell you do, you're given a potency
rating. It's based on accuracy ("perfect" would be having each
letter in the exact middle of its circle — type too early and
circle is before the letter, type too late and the circle is
after the letter) and power (make sure you only type the letter
again when the circle is biggest).
7. Not all spells have the same shapes, number of letters, speed
of the moving light, etc. Practice them all until you find one
or two to "specialize" in.
8. A "good" potency score is anything 130+. To be successful in
a duel, aim for 135+. Anything 140+ is close to perfection.
Good luck! If anyone has anything else to add or needs
clarification, please say so.

Thank You! I couldn’t figure out how to cast a spell for the
life of me. I need a step by step instruction guide or I’ve got
no chance.

Thanks! I'm glad someone's getting use out of them. Seriously
though it took ages to figure out what the deal was, so I wanted
to try to write better instructions than the "official" ones. :)

So what happens when you duel? I assume if you win you get 1
house point, but what if you lose?

I have no idea. Dueling's been down the entire time I've been on
the site and it's still down.
