I'm reading AFFC

And I don't know if it's just my weird postpartum hormones or
what, but I've cried twice now and I didn't cry reading any of
the other books up to this point. Although that might be because
I watched through season 4 before beginning the books. And it's
not big sad events I'm crying about (there really haven't been
any yet and I have 200 pages left), but more quiet moments.
The first was when Arya thinks about Winterfell when the kindly
man asks her what the candles in the temple smell like and later
when she throws all of her possessions into the canal, save for
Needle. Btw, I'm really looking forward to seeing the House of
Black and White in season 5. It's such an eerie and interesting
place, I got chills when Arya steps up to the black and white
door in the season 5 trailer.
The next was when Brienne talks about how her father deserves to
have a daughter and a son, but that she is neither, and then
everything that has happened to her (no one wanting to marry
her, all of the knights betting on who could take her virginity,
Renly, etc.) overwhelms her. Poor Brienne.
I think that's what AFFC does really well so far: focusing on
smaller character moments, especially with Brienne and Jaime and
Arya, which is so different to the craziness that is the second
half of ASOS. Although I do think something big will happen in
King's Landing by the end of this book. Like that Cersei will
get some sort of comeuppance for being the biggest bitch is the
world.

I'm rereading AFFC currently and it's only reaffirming my
opinion that this book has some of GRR Martin's best writing.
You're right that its a book focused on the smaller moments and
I love it for it. I really admire the exploration into the
aftermath of war on the common people and the way the world
rebuilds itself after being ripped apart. The snail pace of each
chapter was torturous for me on my first read, but I'm loving
the moments of introspection from each character and the
fleshing out of the smaller corners of the world.
But Cersei's chapters are just so goddamn entertaining to read,
she's so batshit insane and delusional and I'm really looking
forward to seeing Lena Headey act the shit out of this
storyline, even though the majority of it won't make it onto the
show.
I wonder if they will burn down the Tower of the Hand in the
show? I don't think it's been established that that's where
Tyrion and Tywin resided as Hands in the show, so I'd assume
they won't be wasting the budget on this moment. Which is
unfortunate because it's such a strong visual reflection of
Cersei's paranoia and mental state at this stage of the series.

When I first started AFFC, it was pretty hard to get through
with all the new character POVs and not really a lot going on. I
wasn't enjoying it as much, but then I realized I was reading it
with ASOS in mind. So I started treating it like a different
kind of book and using my English Lit degree mind, and it's so
much more enjoyable.
Yeah, I guess burning the Tower of the Hand will not make it
into the show. Who knows what they could include or add instead
though. And definitely also excited to see Cersei in the
upcoming storyline. Her inner thoughts in the book are so
hilarious and paranoid and cruel, it'll be interesting to see
them acted out.
