Do you ever get pulled back into the series?
By: kamikaze ginny Date: September 13, 2014, 2:36 pm

HP is always kind of there in the back of my mind, not that I
think about it constantly, but to some extent it's probably the
cultural thing that I take with me most and sticks out longest
in terms of likes/dislikes but I seem to go through phases with
it. I don't run around screaming about HP and would say unless
you knew me you wouldn't necessarily know I was a huge fan, like
coworkers would have no idea. It's probably been 6 or 7 years
since I felt overwhelmingly inclined to get back into it with
the full force I did pre DH release (book). I love the movies,
love the fandom in general and have had little spurts every once
in a while of wanting to watch/read but nothing major (notable
exceptions: building this place, early days of Pottermore).
Well, I don't fully know why, but earlier this week I was like
hit with this massive urge to consume all things Potter. Usually
this is satisfied with watching one of the movies but I got
really frantic about having to reread all the books, seek out
all things Jo in terms of interviews, just consume all the canon
HP I could. I actually made a plan back in 2007 to never watch
the deleted scenes, DVD extras, JKR specials, anything
supplementary about HP because then it would truly 100% be over
and I wanted to have this piece of it that I could experience
fresh if the day ever came when I was really craving it, and I
indulged a bit in that this week with some BTS footage and Jo
interviews... And it's funny because I like a lot of things and
they go in phases where I'll be absolutely obsessed with them
and it'll take over my daily life but they'll burn out and
something new comes in ... so I wind up with this collection of
interests that at one point I was all about but now I still like
them but not like love any more but it's different with HP
because it's this cyclical thing where when I come back to it
it's always just as intense as when I was 10 or 15 or 20. I was
just wondering if anyone else was like that?

I think we all get like that at some points in our lives. A few
months ago I was visiting my family and picked up the 6th book
for fun and just read a few pages. I got pulled back in to the
universe immediately and read all the books, saw all the movies
and got really invested in Pottermore again to get some of the
       new info.
A quote from J.K is really appropriate to describe this feeling
“Whether you come back by page or by the big screen, Hogwarts
will always be there to welcome you home.”

       Oh, wow. That is perfect.
I usually get sucked back in October-December. Ive just always
associated the series with all of the fall and winter holidays
so basically whenever it's cold outside, I want to watch or read
       HP.

For me, HP is kind of always present in my life. Everyday
there's something that happens, or that I see that reminds me of
HP. It's the same thing with Seinfeld. Like Dayna said, it's
part of my culture and I definitely go through spurts of HP
mania where I read, watch, research, plan my HP themed party
       that hasn't happened yet, etc.
I'm toward the end of a pretty long reading phase that started
with my husband and I not being able to sleep, so (unlike normal
couples who have sex to help them sleep) we started reading HP
aloud to each other. We started at the beginning in late spring
and now we're at Malfoy Manor in DH. It's this really nice
routine we have going where I read while he rubs my shoulders,
then he reads until I fall asleep. It's just incredibly
comforting having that at the end of the day. And now that I'm
pregnant, we're talking about how we want to share HP with our
children. It's a big part of our lives and I'm really thankful
       for it.

Yep, but I feel that way about a lot of things. BioShock, Halo,
Assassin's Creed, A Song of Ice and Fire, Harry Potter, Batman,
Arrow, Avatar Aang and Korra, and Lord of The Rings is just a
small list of some of the stuff that I am pretty attached to and
thinking of constantly. There are just somethings in life that
you gravitate toward and Harry Potter for a lot of people is one
of those things. Its really crazy to think that if Harry Potter
didn't exist, this forum and everyone on it probably wouldn't
have ever communicated with each other.

This is awesome. If more married couples did this the divorce
       rate might be lower.

I haven't felt really compelled to really get back and immerse
myself in the series for a couple of years now I think, which is
a little sad, but I know it will come back eventually. Like a
few of you have said, when it comes back it comes back in force
and I need to read all the books as well as watch all the
movies, when it comes to Harry Potter, as Heisenberg would say,
       there's no half measures.

Having tattoos related to HP and Star Wars also gives me the
urge of getting really invested every time I look at my wrist or
       my shoulder.

All my friends and family know I'm passionate about the series.
I haven't sat with the books and the films for a while but I've
actually been thinking of doing it soon while I have the time. I
mainly relive the series through Tumblr.
Oh and Hedwig's Theme has been my ringtone since I got it in
       2009.

I think its cute and really lovely that you two read to each
other. I wish my husband were as into the series as I am.
I don't think there is any other interest I have that is on HP's
level. I love Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Doctor Who, The
Simpsons, etc and they are huge things I carry with me and come
up daily in conversation or what have you but none of them match
the intensity I have with Harry Potter. I actually have this
thing at work that I find particularly hilarious. I have a ton
of Doctor Who, Back to the Future, Star Trek and Star Wars stuff
on my desk like action figures and calendars and everyone thinks
I'm this mega nerd and they'll all ask me to explain things to
them, but none of them know the depth of the HP obsession, which
is funny to me since I literally have a forum about it and it's
what I'm most well versed in. I think Harry Potter actually has
shaped and defined parts of my personality, my morals, my
politics and I don't know if I could say that about the others,
       they're just kind of interests.
I will say this though, I'm truly grateful for the wonderful
people I've met through HP here and elsewhere on the internet.
For the most part it's a really great and rewarding community to
       be a part of.
I'm in the middle of HBP right now but am also reading fanfic
which I never really got into but I've had a lot of time on my
       hands.

I sort of grew up having a bit of an obsessive personality. But
nothing touched it quite the way HP did. However, after the last
book came out, I sort of felt as if my HP love was fading away.
Not that I abandoned the books--I still always had a few of them
with me at school and they were always near by. But I kind of
drifted away and the excitement faded. The film releases just
couldn't touch the magic of the book releases, and I guess I
just thought it's extreme hold on me was over.
Then the summer before DH1 was coming to theaters, I went on a
road trip and took the last book along with me to kill some
time, refresh my memory, and because it was the copy I bought in
Europe so it had traveled with me before (I'm sentimental). I
started the first page and I remember thinking, "oh man I'm not
that into this...that sucks..." but then something clicked and I
powered through the book and the HP love just came back in full
force. And its not that I had forgotten, but I think I was
surprised at how powerful of a reaction I still had. And
especially after I had thought maybe I was "over" HP. And then
DH1 came out and it was such a f'cking great movie and as I was
leaving that theater I knew I was entering a personal HP
       renaissance.
After that movie my HP obsession was certainly heightened in a
way it hadn't been in years and in a way I never thought I'd
feel again. So from that experience, I know HP will always be
with me. Unlike any other fandom or series or franchise. It just
touches something in me that nothing else ever has. And even
though I get obsessed and thoroughly enjoy/love things like
ASOIF or Lost or BSG or whatever, I don't expect any of it to
stay with me like HP. I don't expect any of it to shape how I
want to live my life or raise my children or approach difficult
situations. Nothing has taught me so much or meant as much to
       me.
I've definitely noticed I've been drifting away from it again
lately, but unlike the last time I drifted, I'm not sad about
it. When the time is right, I know I can always be pulled back
       in.
