Reading Book 4 after only watching the show?

Need some opinions here, so a coworker just finished Season 4
and when I told her that it would be another year before the
next season she asked if she could borrow the book.
I said she'd probably be fine with reading it from Book 4, even
though there will be a few differences from where some
characters are at this point. Then I realized that she will
have completely missed LS in the epilogue of Book 3...should I
say to read the last few chapter's of ASOS first or just go into
AFFC since LS doesnt appear again until the end of Book 5
anyway.
I really don't know how it would be reading AFFC after only
watching the show, so many things will be different.

Yeah a ton will be different. I'd probably suggest she read the
last few chapters of ASOS or at least read a summary online
before starting AFFC.

Yeah I'm going to give her the second half of Book 3 (in
Australia they split Book 3 into two separate books, did they do
that in the US?) and recommend she reads even just the last few
chapters. Especially because Book 4 is such a hard slog to get
through on a first read, especially the first few chapters, and
even though the characters will be in relatively the same place
that they've left off at the end of Season 4 (save Bran and
Sansa) so many of their internal motivations and thoughts will
be so, so different compared to the show.

Tell her she needs to go to the very beginning and read all the
books, every one, from the beginning. If she starts in on the
fourth book cold, she'll be confused as shit. Not to come off as
a book snob, but this, "I've watched the show and thus don't
need to read all the books" thing annoys the shit out of me.
Like if you don't wanna read the books at all, fine (although
it's your loss if you don't), but if you're going to read them,
do it properly.

^ Pretty much that. I mean, especially now, there is like
another year until the next season of Game of Thrones premieres,
so why not just read all the books properly?

Some people just prefer how the story is told in the tv-series
and likes to watch it without knowing anything about what
happens.

What Hermes said. If your going to read this series(or make an
attempt to read it) you are really making a mistake if you don't
start on Book 1 Page 1. Especially since books are so accessible
and cheap now.

I just gave her the second half of Book 3 and then Book 4, she
might decide when she starts reading that she wants to read it
from the start but I think you'd be able to pick them up from
that point and have it make enough sense.
