Dallas Buyers Club

The performances are good, but the film is too calculated and
too one dimensional to be anything more than a simpering, vapid
piece of Oscar bait. It is at its best in scenes between
McConnaughey and Leto, who play off each other well, but the
film otherwise is an absurd simplification - at best it's
shallow, at worst it's offensive, especially when you consider
the fact that the one prominent transgender character created
specifically for the film, by the end, seems to have served no
point other than to be a catalyst to the main character's fairy
tale character arc. The final scenes are so self-congratulatory,
it's almost completely ironic - considering that the movie had
been depicting the FDA and Big Pharma officials and execs as a
bunch of self-congratulatory, circle-jerking, deceitful a-holes.
Yet, the film is too dense to see that, too convinced of its own
quality, just another in the long list of Oscar season movies
that choose interesting/difficult subject matter but just end up
trivializing it.
4.5-5/10.

I haven't seen the film but if the SAG and GG are anything to go
by, I'd say both McConaughey and Leto are the front runners in
Oscar acting categories.

McConnaughey was really good, but I'd still rank Leo and Tom
Hanks above him. As for Leto, I probably wouldn't mind if he won
it.

While I think you're being too hard on it, I agree that it would
have worked better as a takedown of Big Pharma's role in the
AIDS epidemic, sort of like how Philadelphia looked at equality
and employment rights. I think they had a "there" there and just
didn't follow through on it.

Yeah I have to say I wasn't impressed with the movie itself at
all, just the performances from McConnaughey and Leto (who I
think are very deserving of awards, especially Jared Leto). I
was legitimately surprised to see it nominated for BP.
