You know, I reread this recently

And honestly, not that much happens in it. Most of the danger is
at the very end, or in flashbacks. Most of the "present" action
really is Quidditch and teen romance stuff.
I think it's fitting though, between Phoenix (the moral low
point in the series, I'd say) and Hallows (non-stop action).

Yeah, most of this book wasn't very eventful. I thought that was
a good thing, though; a lot of it was new information on
Voldemort's past (which I found very interesting) and
relationship development (Harry/Ginny, Ron/Hermione). And for a
totally different reason, poor Harry needed a half-normal year.
:(
It wasn't my favorite book, but it's not my least favorite
either.

I agree with Lauren. It didn't have a lot happen, but we learn
some pretty interesting stuff. I liked how laid back it was.
Order of the Phoenix was so doom and gloom and then there's just
a complete change of tone with Half-Blood Prince.

Harry's Monster Chest ugh!!
Moments like those made me dislike the book... okay just the
Harry/Ginny stuff. But I did love the memories and everything
else.

HPB is definitely one of my favorites. It actually might be my
favortie, but I'm incredibly indecisive so I never chose
favorites of anything.
Anyway, I'd like to explain why I think it's my favortie.
I know some people think the memories are boring, but I think
they're fascinating. Well, except the Hepzibah Smith one. I'm
not too fond of that one. But "The House of Gaunt," "The Secret
Riddle," the Slughorn memory, and the one where Voldemort
returns to Hogwarts to ask for a teaching position all give me
goosebumps.
I also love the subsequent discussions Dumbledore and Harry have
about the memories. I love the analysis of them and of
Voldemort's character. These definitely make HBP the most
psychological of the series, and the most academic. In addition
to learning of Voldemort's development, we also see a great
change/growth in Harry. He has one of the best revelations of
the series with the whole "difference between being dragged into
the arena to face a battle to the death and walking into the
arena with your head held high" thing. Lots of character
development and focus on psychology. I think these
characteristics bring this book pretty close to what can be
called a classic modern novel.
The relationship that forms between Harry and Dumbledore is
great. It's really touching, Dumbledore sharing all of this with
Harry and really seeming to care for him/respect him, which
complicates the revealing of Dumbledore's "plan" in Deathly
Hallows and makes it even more heartbreaking. I just loved the
dialogue between them.
While the overall prose of HBP might not be as "magical" or
whatever as some of the others, there are some pretty damn
amazingly written lines, most of which are for Dumbledore:
"let us step into the night and pursue that flighty temptress,
adventure."
"From this point forth, we shall be leaving the firm foundation
of fact and journeying together through the murky marshes of
memory into thickets of wildest guesswork." (I'm a sucker
for alliteration)
This book is also hilarious. There are so many visuals that
crack me up, like the three of them waiting for their OWLs while
Hermione is squeezing their arms and squealing with anxiety,
then she says something like, "I know I've failed everything!"
Or Harry watching awkwardly as Arthur and a completely
embarrassed Molly ask each other and answer identity questions.
So it's late and I'm tired after writing this long explaination.
Let me finish by just saying that I also love the first chapter,
"The Other Minister," Slughorn's character, and everything that
happens after Harry and Dumbledore apparate to outside the cave.
For me, all of this completely overshadows the silly teen
romance and stupid monster in Harry's chest.
Goodnight!

^I basically agree with everything you said. The memories are
all fascinating to me, even the Hepzibah Smith. I just loved
learning more about Voldemort when he was younger.
I thought the tension with Harry trying to discover what
Voldemort was doing was so well paced, and suspenseful as was
him trying to get the memory from Slughorn. I also think the
balance of Dark stuff and normal stuff (Harry's crush on Ginny,
apparating lessons, getting detention) was perfect. OOTP is my
favourite book, but something I prefer about HBP is that it's
more focused.

Tom Riddle is my favourite character. I absolutely love the
memories. He's a very fascinating character in the books.
Half Blood Prince isn't my favourite, but I don't dislike it.

This book has my favorite chapter of all time.
Horcruxes
Dumbledore has so many great lines in this chapter and we find
everything out, and the last paragraph about walking into the
arena and all the difference in the world? FAVORITE LINE EVER.

I Love some parts of this book like the Pensieve scenes,
Harry-Dumbledore relationship and Harry himself (minus chest
monster).
But thats about it. This is defenitely my least favourite book.
I wanted this book to be more serious.
I was very put off by the teen romance which was extremely
immature. In all the 7 books I think I like Ron/Hermione the
least in this book :(
I dont know what JKR should have done with the story by avoiding
all quiddicth and teen romance or keeping it to minimal.
But i wish it had been different :(
