The Day of the Doctor

Really, it ended an hour ago and no one's talking about it?
Anyway, I thought the aliens were a bit of a weak villain, but
overall, I thought the episode was fantastic. I LOVED the entire
end sequence. It was great to see Tennant again, of course, John
Hurt was brilliant, and the banter between the three of them was
perfect.

I liked it, but I only had 3 questions. Obviously, spoilers
galore
1. How do The Doctor and Clara get from the ending events of
"The Name of the Doctor" to the beginning of "The Day of The
Doctor?" I mean, how did it go from Smith carrying Clara in his
arms while talking to Hurt, to Clara being a schoolteacher?
Maybe the explained it, but I definitely missed it.
2. I understand why Hurt and Tennant would forget the events,
but why wouldn't Smith? The reasoning behind Hurt and Tennant
forgetting was because of the crossing time streams, but Smith
did too, so why would he be excluded from forgetting the events?
3. Since we now know that Hurt was McGann's regeneration, that
should mean Smith is the 13th incarnation. Are they going to
address it in the Christmas Special, or instead suggest that
Capaldi is the 13th incarnation?

I loved it. Agreed, the aliens weren't the strongest villain
ever but I don't think they were really the major plot point of
the episode and I really enjoyed all the little nods (Tennant's
"I don't want to go", "Hey look the round things" etc) and
inclusion of Capaldi as (now)13
Will, I can kind of answer some of your questions
1) As far as I really remember that bit at the end of The Name
of the Doctor was more a representation of Hurt than Hurt
himself - Clara saying he was in The Doctor's time stream and
she didn't know why and The Doctor denying him. Although it's
not been explicitly stated, he obviously returned Clara to Earth
and this is now some months ahead with her in a job. Although
it's not happened on screen I just took it as a few months since
the last episode because it's just 11/Clara adventure planning
2) Smith was the oldest incarnation of The Doctor there, so for
him it was his present whereas the others were his past (it's
hard to explain clearly). Basically him crossing his own stream
in the past doesn't affect his present self but would affect his
past self.
3) Nope, Smith is now 12 because he was initially the 11th
Doctor (Eleventh Hour etc) making Capaldi the 13th incarnation.
I think they're going to address the 13 regenerations thing soon
because there have been various interviews where they've
discussed whether that still stands or not and as far as I can
tell they keep changing their minds. (I have a sneaking
suspicion they're going to try what I think they wanted to do
with Tennant - convince us it's really the end and the death of
The Doctor once and for all and then have him surprise
regenerate, but I don't know if they'll manage to keep it quiet)

I can understand they didn't show the transition from the name
of the doctor to the day of the doctor, and why smith can still
remember since it is his present, but capaldi should still be
the 13th. When tennant almost regenerated, he stored the
regeneration energy in the severed hand, making way for
metacrisis-10. Basically, smith would be the 13th because the
necessary energy for an incarnation was used up for
metacrisis-10. So hurt-doctor would be 9, eccleston would be
10, tennant would be 11, metacrisis-10 would be a full
incarnation, so 12, and smith should be 13.

I think Smith will still be the Eleventh Doctor and Capaldi will
be the Twelfth. Hurt was The War Doctor.
I also wonder why they cut The War Doctor's regeneration from
hinting that he regenerated into the Ninth. Big ears, short
hair, something. Because I wonder if he just regenerates into
the Twelfth?
Either way, brilliant episode as I expected due to Moffat's
absence from the later half of series 7.
Loved Clara in this one. Too bad they couldn't get Amy back. Amy
and Clara together, what could be going on in my mind?

He regens into 9. You can see it in his eyes

Oh he was definitely regenerating into 9 it's just because of
not being able to get Eccleston back they didn't show it, but
that's what the ears thing was about. Meta-crisis 10 isn't a
true Doctor, or timelord for that matter, because he's half
human, so I don't think he counts as taking full regeneration
energy to make because Donna had to be the fuse. Plus he wasn't
regenerating into a new form or anything so I think meta-crisis
10 is outside of the limit of regens anyway.
Hurt was The War Doctor until 10 & 11 altered their timelines
and accepted him as a part of their past, and I think because 11
still remembers him that effectively makes him the new 9,
bumping everyone along. I'm sure they'll explain with Capaldi at
some point whether he's the last one (which I highly doubt)
either in the Christmas Special or a later date.
I mean, I'm pretty certain Baker was supposed to be a future
regeneration who'd decided to revisit an old form he'd enjoyed
(I guess he gets a handle on regeneration later on, perhaps the
same way 8 made The War Doctor) so that's a big point to go
against the 13 regens thing.
Edit: This may help clear things up about regens (or not):

So Capaldi will still be The Twelfth Doctor. End of Discussion.
So this makes Capaldi the last Doctor unless we get another
twist. But I can see BBC ending this show in the next three
years.
But I can see BBC ending this show in the next three
years.
I doubt it, it's the BBC's most profitable drama, with a massive
international market and dedicated fanbase and it's just getting
more popular. It'd be silly of them to end it when it's a series
they can effectively keep going forever. I mean, never say never
because the BBC have made some silly decisions due to budget
cuts recently and if our government changes the license fee
laws, which they've been threatening to do for a while, it could
force it to stop, but I really don't think Capaldi will be the
last. The Timelords gave The Master more regens as a gift in the
past, maybe if he saves Gallifrey they'll give The Doctor
something similar?
