I finished The Cuckoo's Calling

(I assumed we're just talking about it in this section but if
I'm in the wrong place my bad!)
I really enjoyed it. I'm a reasonably big fan of crime fiction
anyway, but I was definitely aware when reading that I was
enjoying it for more than it just being JK's new book - I'm glad
it got the publicity though because I don't know if I'd have
discovered it otherwise!
The plot is good, a few nice twists and turns and a mystery that
isn't too far fetched, with a really good littering of clues
throughout that seem fairly inconsequential at first.
My only real criticism is that there are quite a lot of
secondary characters to keep track of and sometimes it gets a
little confusing who's being talked about, but it's not too off
putting.
I'd really recommend it and I'm glad to see JK's non-Potter
style developing well - I enjoyed The Casual Vacancy a lot but
this is definitely a step up.

I loved how we still get her essence in the writing style. I
also wished this was her debut novel after HP instead of The
Casual Vacancy which wasn't too bad, but felt too extensive.
As for Cuckoo's, I enjoyed the story and getting to know about
the characters and suspects. Maybe Cormoran can be the next
Sherlock if she does decide to make sequels.

Apparently she's already done with the sequel. It comes out next
year.

I'd say for the most part I really enjoyed it. I thought the
ending was kind of weak.
For some reason I suspected John Bristow from the
beginning, but talked myself out of it because I thought it was
stupid of him to investigate a crime he himself committed. And
then when it turned out it WAS him, the reasoning she gave was
sort of lame. Basically that he's diabolical and deluded enough
to think he could hire an investigator to further cover his
tracks yet still manage to get away with it? Because he was a
killer his whole life? Then he should have just left it alone. I
don't know, I thought it was a stretch.
But besides that I found the story and cast of characters really
engrossing. I felt from the start that the story was really
compelling. It had JK's style (although not as much of her
humor), but it also felt a little new and different, which I
found exciting. The HP books were basically mysteries if you
minus out all the magical elements. And so this felt just as
tightly written and plotted.
If anything this felt a lot less heavy than The Casual Vacancy.
Which is neither good nor bad. But I enjoyed the relative
lightness of it. And I'm looking forward to a sequel.

I'm glad she's writing a sequel because this really felt like
the establishing first book for a series about an investigative
duo.
While at first I also thought Bristow's prompting of
the investigation was a bit far fetched, I looked at it again
and it was also an attempt to deflect attention - he assumed
he'd never be caught but Strike would discover Ageyman and pin
all the blame on him and therefore Bristow would get even more
enjoyment out of watching himself completely get away with it
