Doctor Who imdb board

Jesus, what is up with that board? A lot of the Brits on there
are just vicious to Americans. I don't deny that a lot of
Americans are pretty contemptuous, but it's a bit ignorant to
dislike an entire country just because its citizens happened to
be born there.

I'm not justifying them, because I think the way a lot of Brits
on the imdb board act is appalling, but I think the logic behind
it is a lot of people (myself included) have noticed a massive
change in the show since it started being simul-broadcast on
BBC1 and BBC America, and BBC America started getting loads of
cool behind-the-scenes shows and things and they cancelled
Confidential here (I don't know if you guys had that but it was
a behind-the-scenes show per episode and it was really great).
I think there is a real feeling that the showrunners have been
trying to appeal more to the American demographic and a lot of
people think it's changed the show for the worse, so I guess
that makes a lot of the Brits on the imdb boards fairly bitter
towards American viewers even though obviously it's not really
their fault.

They cancelled Confidential? My dad always used to download
those and Torchwood Declassified. That's kinda sad.

I'd have to agree that there's been a shift in the show since
BBC America started simulcasting, you can see the shift, it's
more episodic and paletteable for an American audience which is
really a shame since most Americans who watch Doctor Who watch
it for what it is and don't need it dumbed down, amped up, sexed
up, etc. I think even the run time was shortened a bit.

I liked how it was before, honestly. I don't like the darker
tone at all. I'm really struggling to get through season 7, and
it was hard to get through season 6 too.
I can see them being a little upset that they supposedly changed
the show for American audiences, but it's ridiculous to blame
the Americans and treat them like shit. BBC makes the decisions,
not us. However, I think it's more than just a feud about the
show...they seem to dislike Americans because they really think
they're better than us. They also seem to think the Americans on
that board should "prove themselves" or something. There's this
one American chick on there who seems to be trying way too hard
to fit in, she's constantly bashing Americans too and even made
an American-bashing signature, like she thinks that'll make her
fit in better or something, which I just find kind of pathetic.
Partly because I don't think "fitting in" is that important, and
partly because they shouldn't make anyone feel that they have
to.

Yeah it's been set to standard-length 45 minutes now which just
stinks of being made to fit with commercial breaks for the US
because the BBC here doesn't have adverts (woo) and often there
were variable lengths of episodes per season, some 50-60 minutes
and some 45, along with no more two-parters.
I just think it's mental because obviously the American audience
like it for the style it was when they started watching it so
dumbing it down seems a really unnecessary desperate attempt to
draw in more audiences.

I won't deny there's often a generally hostile feeling to
Americans from a lot of Brits (and I've encountered it from
Aussies and Canadians) so I guess it could be that? I've not
been on the Doctor Who boards in ages though because the fan
theories all started to bore me and become too ludicrous, so I
could be wrong about these people.

That's what makes me so nervous about traveling to England, or
any other country, really. I really want to visit London
someday, but I don't want to drop a few thousand dollars on a
trip overseas, just to be treated like crap because I come from
the States. I know not ALL Brits are like that, but I've heard
some horror stories, and it makes me hesitant. I would never
treat a tourist from another country badly, but Americans are
generally disliked in other countries and I don't know how I'd
be treated.

American tourists have a pretty bad rep, but generally from my
experience of everywhere I've traveled and when I worked the
Olympics, the Americans that act like decent people are treated
decently - the ones that are the 'stereotypical' American
tourist (loud, seem rude, only speak English in non-English
speaking countries etc.) get a worse experience, but that's
really true with any tourist from anywhere, I just think it's a
stereotype that a lot of people associate with people from the
US.
I mean, Kelsey lived here and she got on fine, and she's
traveled around Europe too, basically if you're a decent person
you've got nothing to worry about, but I think because we're a
fairly bitter and self-deprecating nation there's a lot of
people who just like to be angry and stereotypical tourists make
easy targets :/
(there's also a much greater social context for feelings of
resentment to the US because of our government's relationship
with yours, but that's way too lengthy to get into)
