So apparently (spoiler)

Benedict Cumberbatch is Khan! It seems Australia got the movie
already and that's the news coming out.
Not sure how that's gonna work but we'll see.

Yes, it was released last week in Australia, I believe. I'm
pretty disappointed about it being Khan, though. I kinda felt
that Abrams needed to come up with a new story, instead of
reusing old ones, but I guess the whole point of a new timeline
is to retell stories in different ways. We'll have to see.
My only real problem with this is them making Khan British. That
doesn't even make sense.

Nice to see it confirmed but I'm pretty sure most people figured
that one out? Or at least strongly suspected it.

Some people figured it out, but most people thought they were
just crazy and seeing signs where there weren't any because they
wanted it to be Khan so bad. There really wasn't even any
evidence. But yeah, the Khan theory has been around since they
announced there was going to be another movie....

Yeah loads of people were speculating/predicting it ever since
the movie was announced.
Yeah regarding why he's suddenly British now, it's not really
explained in the film and that this reveal is more like a twist
ending of sorts, that's what I've read.

That's stupid. If you're going to just randomly change his
nationality, there needs to be an explanation. The timeline
before the Kelvin was destroyed is supposed to be the same as in
TOS, and in TOS Khan was most definitely not British.
Really, really pissed at Abrams & co. right now. They had four
years to come up with something good, and instead they just
regurgitated a pile of crap that makes no sense. It's an insult
to the fans.
But maybe I'm overreacting and they handled it decently. Somehow
I don't think so, though.

I don't know if you have read this spoiler yet, so I'll tag it.
Read at your own risk:
Apparently Kirk dies at the end, but is revived by
Khan's blood. WTF? How is that even possible, and since when
does Khan's blood have magical healing abilities? He was
genetically modified to be stronger and smarter, but I can't
imagine how that means his blood can bring the dead back to
life. Ugh, the more I hear about this, the more worried I am
that it's going to suck. I've been defending Abrams and the
writers since the 2009 movie, but that might change if this is
as bad as I think it will be. On the plus side, the plot sounds
like non-TOS fans will like it, but TOS fans will likely cringe.

Ok so yeah I have read those spoilers and yes I have no idea how
that's gonna work either.
Although what I understood was that he doesn't actually
die but is almost dying, but yeah, regardless, I'm not sure why
Khan's blood should work for him. Maybe it's actually more of a
simple blood transfusion thing and that only Khan's blood
matches Kirk's or something like that? I don't know, but really
what boggles my mind is that they've basically rehashed Wrath of
Khan here. They've got the same villain seeking revenge and then
one main character dies, the twist being that this time it's
Kirk instead of Spock. I knew that shot in one of the trailers
that I posted about here previously wasn't going to be good
news.
Really though I never had much faith in Abrams. I was hoping he
would prove me wrong by doing something original but never
believed he would. I thought the whole alternate timeline thing
was really unnecessary. It's just trying to be too clever. I can
imagine the filmmakers really patting themselves on the back at
how clever they are. This Khan twist seems like the same thing
to me. Still, I'll be watching the movie regardless and
hopefully it won't actually be as bad on the screen as it
sounds.

The alternate timeline MIGHT have been more effective in the
hands of someone else. Even this movie might have been better if
they'd decided to focus on the aftereffects of Vulcan's
destruction or something, instead of just retelling the story of
Khan. Of course, I'm getting ahead of myself. It might still
surprise me. I'll try my best to sit back and enjoy the movie
for what it is, instead of nit-picking every detail...though I'm
not sure that will go down well.

Yes, exactly, if they were going to do this whole alternate
timeline thing, why not focus on its consequences, on the moral
and philosophical implications of it, you know, kind of like
what Star Trek actually used to be about? Eh I don't know.
Personally, I hope that someday when Abrams' films are over and
long gone, someone actually tries to make an entirely new series
of Star Trek, only this time start out as movies rather than
another TV show. It should be an interesting challenge, I would
think, in more ways than one.
