Cold War

Thoughts on the episode?
I quite liked it. Lots of tension, not too much focus on the
'mystery' of Clara (which I already hate but I really should
just accept) Davos was a good captain of a submarine. Also the
'humanisation' of the Soviets during that era was pretty neat,
because it's often easy to just view them as an enemy or
whatever. All round a good episode, though nothing amazing.
I think one of the major problems with series 7 trying to be all
stand alone 'mini-movie' episodes rather than having some
two-parters means it's harder to develop deeper stories.

I'm still on the fence about Clara. I like her personality but
hate the backstory. I again fell asleep the last fifteen minutes
of this episode (had a work seminar all day) but I thought it
was good and I liked that it was stand alone this time. I
haven't been crazy about the way series 7 is going either. I
prefer there to be some continuity through the season rather
than just a bunch of adventures and I think it cheapened the
Ponds exit in 7.1 and now Clara's story is suffering in 7.2 as a
result. On the other hand, the stand alones are a cool way to
see new places and monsters and get a feel for Clara as a
companion without being bogged down with exposition for the
through line for the season. I do hope they abandon this format
for series 8 though.

Not gonna lie, I've been super disappointed the in this season.
I've tried really hard to like these episodes, as I love this
show. But I go into an episode with high hopes, and I lose
interest :( I hate it.
I've been watching mainly for Clara now. She has the potential
to be a really cool partner/companion. I like her wit and her
banter with the Doctor. But I feel her potential has been sorely
wasted.
