Spielberg, Kaminski talk the look of 'Lincoln'

       From The Hollywood Reporter:

And I found another interesting featurette on why they decided
to focus on the last few months of Lincoln's life instead of
       doing a more conventional biopic:

That featurette was better than the movie. Lincoln looks awesome
in trailers and in segments. The music, the acting, the setting,
the stakes, the history, etc. Its all awesome. Like I don't need
Spielberg to tell my why a movie about Abraham Lincoln and the
13th Amendment would be compelling. But the movie itself was
lacking, to me. It didn't make good on its promises. The pieces
were better than the whole. It was like the disparity between an
advertised Big Mac and an actual Big Mac.
But thanks for sharing because I really do enjoy little
featurettes like this. Especially everything about the look of
       the movie.

I actually am among the few then, I guess, that didn't
necessarily think the trailers etc. were that great. I thought
they made the movie look all "epic" and "grand" with lots of
"hurrah" moments whereas the actual film I found was lacking in
those departments, and all the better for that. Stuff like DDL's
big "now!" speech looked too much like the usual showboating but
made much more sense to me in context within the actual film (I
especially like the bit when he slams his hand on the table and
everyone shuts the fuck up). As someone who is not generally
interested in politics and doesn't know a lot about American
history, the film made me want to read up more about Lincoln,
about Thaddeus Stevens, about the whole civil war. That was what
sealed the deal for me that this is a great movie. Normally I
find myself being just satisfied with whatever was presented on
screen in such a historical film, and never do I feel inspired
to read up about more than just the trivial differences between
the fiction of said movie and the facts of history. The other
thing that surprised me was that I really cared about Lincoln,
and more so than that, I really cared about Stevens as well. I'd
be hard pressed to find another BP nominee this year where I
actually really cared about the characters (SLP and Django come
close but not that close) and I wasn't expecting that from what
I thought would be another "Amistad," which I thought was a fine
film in its own right but a bit too... dry.

And therein lies the problem. Please don't take this as a slight
but I feel like most Americans already know this piece of
history and if they don't shame on them. That's why it feels so
generic to me. Plus, it shows a really biased side of the Civil
War because it's showing you Lincoln and the Union and vilifying
the Confederates; showing you the tail end of the war and
simplifying it by presenting the whole conflict in the context
of the 13th Amendment. Spielberg has a better grasp on Lincoln
in this featurette than he does in the movie. He didn't make
Lincoln human, he presented him as a demi god. I like that he
addresses the issue of presidential power and did Lincoln cross
the line (because he did several times) but he didn't push it
       far enough.
I just don't think you can begin to understand Lincoln or the
climate of the Civil War when you're being presented with a
skewed view of the time period. Also, as someone that frequently
reads the Library of Congress' database of annals of Congress,
not that hard to write what's already written and archived.

I'm glad the film has driven you to learn more about history. I
really can't slight anyone for ever being drawn to a subject and
inspired to learn more. So good for you. I can respect that. I
personally really tend to enjoy that time period in American
History. Like even Gangs of New York took place during that time
(a much better film (with a cheesy 9/11-inspired ending) and a
wildly different performance from DDL which is crazy to think
       about actually).
But to tack onto what Dayna said, I think a lot of us were
disenchanted with Lincoln because we learned about this
repeatedly in school. Every few years it was brought up again
and drilled into us (to be honest, American history doesn't go
back that far so no wonder they repeated themselves). Lincoln is
on our money, he's got monuments, and his face was carved into
the side of a freaking mountain. He's a big deal. We all know
the story. And I guess some of us were just looking for less of
a history lesson (because I'm sure we all got flashbacks to
classrooms while sitting through this film), and more of an
inspired and nuanced take on the whole process.
Which isn't to say that there were things in this movie I didn't
enjoy. I really enjoyed the politics and James Spader's lobbyist
for example. But I honestly felt like this was a chore to sit
through. And that's coming from someone who is actually
interested in SO many aspects of this film.

       Definitely enjoyed the cinematography.
