I think I liked ZD30 better than Argo

I keep going back and forth. I think the last 20 minutes of Argo
were more intense than the raid in ZD30 but overall I was more
engaged in ZD30 and it led to a pretty great discussion
afterwards. It's probably in my top two for the year.

They're both way up there for me. But I still think I prefer
Argo. It was a tad more nuanced. And I liked so many little
things about Argo like the Hollywood aspect, the time period,
the stakes, the time-frame and confines in which they worked in,
and the emotion.
Which is not to say I disliked Zero Dark Thirty which had
suspense, managed to make ten years move along quickly and
interestingly, and had a general ambivalence towards the CIA,
their agents, and their protocol (which I really liked and which
can't be easy to pull off well). But there was maybe a human
aspect that I felt it lacked somehow. I felt like I didn't have
enough reason to root for these characters or something. I liked
Maya and I felt for her and I respected her and I WAS rooting
for her, but I think I rooted more for the characters in Argo.
They're both great films though. And the point wasn't really to
root for Maya as much as it was to follow her along on this
journey, to see how everything unfolded through her eyes. I felt
the emotion was intentionally taken out of ZD30 so thats how I
was meant to read it. But I just generally like a movie when I
have someone who grips me and has me really root for them.
My opinions may very well change over time and upon rewatches.
But there it is. And this is truly me nitpicking a fantastic
film.
I mean...they both had Kyle Chandler. Whats not to like? His
eyes are so dreamy.

I saw Argo in October and haven't seen it since so there's a
very good possibility that I'm just reacting to having recently
seen Zero Dark Thirty.
I think the human aspect of ZD30 was there but it wasn't as
explosive as Argo because we don't really get to know Maya
beyond the confines of her job whereas we know that every
character in Argo has a family and a life they're fighting to
get back to so that makes the stakes higher.
Out of the BP nominees these two are my favorites. I'd rank as
follows:
1. ZD30*
2. Argo*
3. Django Unchained
4. Silver Linings Playbook
5. Lincoln
6. Les Mis
*probably will go back and forth until the day of
Haven't seen:
Life of Pi
Amour
Beasts of the Southern Wild

See I always find I have to divorce myself from how much I
personally like a movie and whether its award worthy. Every year
I have a personal favorite film that I prefer, that I would rank
as number one (that I would award BP in my Dana Awards). And
every year I know that whatever film it is won't win best
picture and that it doesn't even really deserve to. Movies like
Black Swan, Inglorious Basterds, The Descendants, An Education,
Midnight in Paris, etc.
And this year, for me, that movie is Django. I'd probably rank
that as number one because I personally enjoyed it more. I'm a
QT fan and this film was all things I love in a film. But I know
its not going to win best picture. And it doesn't necessarily
deserve it either because of flaws here and there (that don't
bother me, but that come into play when considering a BP and the
execution of a film).
My personal top three would probably be Django, Argo, and SLP.
Four would go to ZD30. But if I was ranking them in a purely
objective manner, my list would be different and ZD30 would be
higher.

I'm ranking based on my personal opinion, not necessarily what I
think will win. It's too early to tell right now because the
past few years there's been some last minute buzz that overtook
the initial front runner. I don't think ZD30 will win BP because
there's too much of a backlash right now, I even read of an
academy member advocating for people to not vote for it. If
Lincoln doesn't win it's going to go to a dark horse. If you
break it down to who is voting for these movies it makes logical
sense that Lincoln would win based on the demographic of the
academy and the connections the cast of Lincoln has.
If you're talking about how I would rank films based on their
technical aspect then I have to say that my biggest pet peeve as
a film fan is when people can't separate a movie they loved from
whether or not it was a "good movie". There are a lot of movies
that I'd rank really high on my list of favorite films that I
don't think are good movies or I don't think are award worthy
movies. It's like when people think tent pole movies were made
to win Oscars, they're entertaining popcorn flicks but they're
not award winners. I like film noirs, tragic period pieces,
quirky/offbeat indies, and then cult 80s movies... I'm not
stupid enough to think that something like Valley Girl is a good
movie technically but I'd sure as hell rather watch it than a
lot of BP winners.
I loved Django. We did matinees all this week so it was just us
and the senior citizens and man I was the only person in the
theater laughing during Django, which was super awkward. I'd
probably sit home and watch Django again with some friends, I
probably wouldn't do that with ZD30 or Argo.

Yeah I hope you weren't thinking that I assumed you were doing
that, being a movie snob or being delusional or what have you. I
just felt like I needed to preface my opinion for some reason.
I have that same pet peeve. When people look at a movie like
TDKR or The Avengers or Inception or Skyfall or DH2 and think it
should be winning awards. And that's not to say a blockbuster
can't be a good movie. I found myself admiring a lot about each
movie I just listed, and not just purely based on entertainment
but in terms of sequences, cinematography, visuals,
performances, score, etc. And I'm more likely to rewatch one of
those than something like Tree of Life, The Hurt Locker, or
Lincoln. And back in the day some blockbusters were GREAT
movies. I just feel like these days its quantity over quality
when it comes to films of that size. And its a shame that many
of the smaller films that often get nominated don't have more of
an audience.
And I know it makes sense that Lincoln will win based on the age
of those voting and what they seem to respond to. Its a safe
choice. But its still hard for me to accept. I have a feeling
this year is going to be another Slumdog year for me. Ugh.
