Was this in the book, or just the show?

I was wondering -- were Renly and Loras Tyrell lovers in the
books as well? I'm only about 100 pages into Clash of Kings and
there hasn't been any mention of it, so I wondered if that was
something they made up for the show.

I'm about 200 pages into it and it hasn't been mentioned. I
doubt it is. There's a lot of good scenes that were in the show
       that weren't in the books.
Ros isn't in the books either.

Yeah, I know Ros isn't in the books. Makes me wonder why they
even bothered putting her in the show; she seems utterly useless
       to the plot.
Not sure how I feel about them adding the Renly/Loras bits to
the show. Seems like they're putting in homosexuality just for
the sake of putting in homosexuality (hence the Ros girl-on-girl
action in the brothel) and not because it's really important.
That's my complaint about Ros too, with a man or a woman --
she's just there to add nudity to the show. I don't mind nudity
and sex as long as it has a purpose other than just to make the
fanboys go "Ooooh! Tits and bush! *drools*" but that's the
problem with shows on HBO. They add sex just because they can.

The scenes that she was in helped flesh out Theon, Littlefinger,
       and Pycelle's characters a bit.

Yeah, HBO tends to do that.

You never see Renly or Loras have sex (because neither is a
POV), but it's strongly, strongly implied that both are gay and
they're together and most people know it. It becomes more
prominent in the second and third books. HBO didn't pull it out
of nowhere. Like, Sansa wants to marry Loras and his family
tells her his brother "would make a better husband." In the
third or fourth book, can't remember, Jaime tells Loras to
follow orders or he'll "take your sword and stick it someplace
       even Renly never found."
Also, Renly's personal guard is the Rainbow Guard. I'm not
       kidding.

It's pretty much this. I'm not really into Ros, but her, uh,
"sexposition" scenes kind of flesh out some side characters who
are important but who aren't POVs in the book, so if you want to
show them, you'll have to come up with new material. For
instance, Varys and Littlefinger's throne-room exchanges on the
show aren't in the book, either.

Ha ha, yeah, I caught on to the Rainbow Guard thing. Way to be
       subtle, Martin.  ::)

       Bwahahaa. Forgot about that.

It's alluded to. Plus, there are some homophobic jokes said by
soldiers in the books that target the two (or just one of them).
