When/If you ever start watching the 9th/10th Doctor, there are a
few specials in-between seasons that you have to watch for
continuity. I accidentally skipped the specials between S4 and
S5 and was so confused for the first 10 minutes of S5 before I
went back and found the specials. So yes, some of them are
neccessary, some are not. Some are not worth watching, and some
       of them are.
Here's a list of what specials to watch and when to watch them.
I'll but an * next to the specials that ARE neccessary to watch.
And there are a few specials that I recommend watching (personal
       opinion) but are not neccessary).
       Season 1
'Children in Need' 8 minute special. Picks up right where S1
left off (You can watch it here:
  HTML http://youtu.be/IZK8tPwA0Ro)
       *
       The Christmas Invasion *
       Season 2
       The Runaway Bride *
       Season 3
       Time Crash
       Voyage of the Damned
       Season 4
       The Next Doctor
Planet of the Dead (not sure if this is absolutely unnecessary
but I highly recommend watching it)
The Waters of Mars (same as 'Planet of the Dead' - good special
that I recommend watching, but not essential)
The End of Time (2 parter) * (don't make the same mistake I did
by accidentally skipping this episode! ;))
       Season 5
       A Christmas Carol
Time/Space (two 3 minute specials), not necessary but they're
really short, hilarious and worth watching (you can find these
       on YouTube)
       Season 6
       Death is the Only Answer
The Doctor, the Widow, and the Wardrobe (blech episode, IMO)
       Good as Gold
       Pond Life
       Season 7
Oh, and how are you liking the show so far? Always curious to
       hear from a new viewer.

Oh my god, I could kiss you for that post, but instead I'll give
       you two chocolate frog cards.
I do plan on going back and watching 9 and 10. It's funny, I had
my sister over for dinner last night and she's seen all of 9 and
10 but none of 11 so we're all over the place.
I'll probably have oodles of time to watch them as I have a
feeling I'm going to be laid off from work... wah waaaah (sad
       trombone noise).

Planet of the Damned was better written than half the 10th
Doctor episodes. I managed to catch up with the Doctor Who
episodes between work and having a newborn. Not sure how I
managed that. It was almost like therapy.

It's my new favorite show. I'm in love with it. I want to marry
       it.
