I just finished the books

I really liked them and I definitely agree that there's a
"there" there, a point to all of it. I like the social allusions
and the Capitol's parallels to ancient Rome (the names, the
vomitorium, gladiatorial combat, "bread and circuses," etc.).
Probably my only complaint, and it's not really even a
complaint, is that it could have used more. Like, just the
second Games alone deserved its own book, I think, or a longer
version of the second. I was disappointed that the Victory Tour
was so truncated; I was expecting to see more of each district.
I actually liked the third one — a lot of people didn't — but
again, it felt rushed to me. Or at least, the pacing was off —
they spend time doing a bunch of nothing in D13 and then BAM
running through the Capitol getting picked off. I know they're
YA books and Collins was probably on the mother of all
deadlines, but if anything it could have used some fleshing out.
This is another instance where doing a fourth film will really
help, probably even more so than in the case of HP. Maybe I'm
just used to ASOIAF where each book is like 900 pages long, but
if there's one area where the trilogy could've been improved,
it's the depth.

I think most fans would agree with you on the depth. And after
some thinking, I do think that maybe splitting Mockingjay into
two books might be a good thing after all. Since it appears
that's going to happen, let's hope they do it justice.

I liked the third one too.
It was pretty depressing, but why wouldn't it be.
The second is my favourite, because Finnick!
I love him and was so mad at the third book.
Oh and I'm reading the best Finnick/Annie fanfic right now. It's
filling in all the gaps from Finnicks POV and oh my god MY
EMOTIONS.

I've thought about it more and I have to conclude that it's a
great idea — very well suited to the screen — but a mediocre
execution. Some of it feels a little too heavy-handed. It has a
pretty awesome slate of supporting characters that just don't
get the depth or facetime they deserve (Annie, for example,
interests the hell out of me and you hardly even see her after
the most fascinating thing about her — mental breakdown after
her partner was decapitated — is out). I can tell that a lot of
thought went into the society and the logistics, but it just
doesn't strike me as being that deep. I don't get the impression
that Collins has the attention to detail or the raw imagination
of a Rowling or a Martin. Probably the best thing to be said
about the series is that it makes young people think, and next
to braindead crap like Twilight, maybe that's enough.

@elektra: can you send me the link? Finnick and Annie fascinate
me. I found myself getting angry in the third book when all we
heard about was Katpiss and her problems and not about
Finnick/Annie.
@Hermes:
According to wikipedia Suzanne Collins was a writer for teen
television series (Shelby Woo and Clarissa Explains It All) and
then wrote children's books before she wrote The Hunger Games. I
think it's interesting because so much of the plot in the books
is glossed over and it feels like the book was written to be a
movie. I mean, "they toured all the Districts" or "Katniss and
Annie went back to District 12 to get a dress" are just two of
many areas where she could have gone into depth but didn't. I
think there's a reason the film cut out pretty much zero of the
book, it was written by a screenwriter. Just the way the actions
are written, and even though it's in first person there's not a
lot of inner-monologuing going on that didn't translate to the
screen.
Oh and don't get me started on Annie. After she was mentioned in
Catching Fire and then built up I was waiting for a lot of Annie
moments in Mockingjay. Total missed opportunity there.

It's a cute story... I read it all yesterday.
All I could think of when I was reading it was that little
cartoon on tumblr:

I agree Hermes- the writing isn't the best and there isn't
enough detail focused on the things I really want to know.
I wanted to know everything about their world.
