For me it's Yates, seeing as he directed my three favourite
Potter films. :D

This may sound dumb, but I think they all brought their own
thing to the series that it needed. Columbus found an amazing
cast and established that world. Cuaron, for me, made it feel
less like a children's film and made it feel like the movies
weren't just going to be clones of each other. He's the reason
I kept watching. Newell made them feel like real
adventure/fantasy films. And then Yates made them more serious.

Yeah, Yates. He just got the series, man. He gave it a perfect
ending. I still can't believe that Part 2 got a ninety-six (or
seven?) on Rotten Tomatoes. That just blows my mind.
I rank all his Potter films above the other directors' Potter
films.

I can agree with this. Each one had his own strengths.
1. Columbus put together a great case, made them whimsical and
laid a solid foundation.
2. Cuaron matured the series, visually and thematically.
3. Newell made the series feel British and made a great popcorn
adventure movie.
4. Yates provided the consistency necessary to close out the
series and helped the actors "arrive."
I think I'd still say Yates overall, but each one deserves
credit.

This was hard for me because I love both Cuaron and Yates. I
think Cuaron did an amazing job with the one film he directed,
but I also absolutely love Yates' films and how he ended the
series.
In the end I voted for Cuaron because I figured he'd end up with
less votes. And I just love Cuaron in general, regardless of HP.
But I just also really appreciate how he recharged the series.
The things he changed, he changed for the better (layout of
hogwarts, look of the wands, etc). And I don't know if it was
because the kids were getting older so they were starting to
"get it" or if it was Cuaron's influence, but they started
acting like an ensemble, reacting to things even when they
weren't the focus of the scene rather than waiting for their
turn to say a line. Also, I love that he had them write essays
and think about their characters. He really set a tone that I
loved and that Yates later built on.
That being said, I still think Yates is an amazing director. If
I could have, I would have split me vote.

I hated Yates with a passion after OOTP came out, I was still a
book purist when that film came out so it was devastation lol.
Thankfully I grew up before HBP came out and after I saw the
performances and cinematography Yates had managed to find in the
series I was a fan.
BTW, OOTP is now my favourite movie of the series outside of DH.

Oh I hated Order of the Phoenix back in 2007. Now it's one of my
favourites. It's funny how taste changes as you mature, Goblet
of Fire was always my favourite Potter film, now 6 years later I
cannot bear to watch it.

I was really disappointed with Order of the Phoenix when I first
saw it in 2007. Now I really like it. Used to love Goblet of
Fire, now it's my least favourite.
