After watching this again

I've finally realized that the film is quite jerky with it's
pacing. While there were certainly editing issues with ootp, the
story flowed better where as with HBP, the editing was much
better but the flow of the story just isn't there. It sort of
goes "okay now we do Voldemort stuff. Okay now we do teenage
stuff. Okay now Malfoy is up to something".
I've said before, that though it's a fine film, you can
definitely tell how it was affected by the writers strike.
There's just little things that would have helped make the film
go smoother that just never could quite be written maybe? And
the lack of development for Harry and Ginny and focus on the
Half Blood Prince in the second half sort of hold back the film
from being amazing overall.
IDK if this makes any sense. Thoughts?

I think it's a very pretty film but I agree the pacing is all
sorts of messed up. Towards the end they really just drop the
Half Blood Prince plot and the reveal that Snape is the Half
Blood Prince feels so inconsequential. I don't think they put
any emphasis on Harry's obsession with the book, it kind of just
seemed like "Oh this person's old potions book is great for
cheating!" ... there was no connection to anything else relevant
in the story. They could have killed two birds with one stone if
they'd kept in Ginny's line about trusting something from a book
or w/e - that at least would have established H/G a little
better.
I don't think the movie could decide if it was about horcruxes
or hormones and it felt really unbalanced, throw in the HBP book
and it was just jumbled.
When I read the book I thought they'd try a Godfather II
approach and have the flashbacks flow a little better with the
story. The horcruxes should have been on the front burner and
the relationships should have been the backdrop. If they'd
emphasized how the Potions Book was a mysterious and potentially
dark object that Harry thought was connected to his past it
would have been more compelling.
Harry/Ginny was doomed from OOTP but they didn't do them any
favors with the absolutely stupid "chemistry building" scenes
the had in HBP. They were barely together in this book, it is
completely unclear why Harry liked her. It kind of just seemed
like he showed up at the Burrow and noticed she had a vagina and
was like, "that'll do".

Exactly that Dayna. They really dropped the ball on this. The
balance between the lightheartedness and the darkness of the
story was really unbalanced and they really screwed up on the
Half Blood Prince book.
When Snape revealed he was the Half Blood Prince it was like,
why do we care? In the film it was something that helped Harry
in the Potions class.
And as mentioned Harry/Ginny relationship in the films was
doomed since OotP film with Ginny's development in that film was
cut out. :|

Am I the only person who didn't think they butchered Ginny in
OoTP? I thought she was fine in that, set up great to be more in
the spotlight on HBP
Unfortunately then they killed her by giving her the crappiest
lines of all time

I'm bitter about not getting any chocolate egg scene or a scene
in which Ginny masterminds Harry's convo with Sirius OR a scene
in which Ginny tells Harry to stop being an emo twat.
She just wasn't fiery book!Ginny and nearly all of her glances
were added in after the fact by Bonnie. It wasn't scripted. She
deviated from GOF significantly IMO.

I do miss the fiery-ness. I didn't know that Bonnie added those
in! Good girl

This is off topic but every time I see your thread I make the
... I can't like spell it out... the weird chicken-like noise
GOB makes.
Anyway, yeah she did! I always felt bad for her. She must have
read the books thinking she had this meaty role and then gotten
the script and been perplexed. I think JKR should have told
someone early on that she was going to be a major player.

Cocka cocka caw!!! I sat there watching my sig for like 5
minutes one time, cracking up. :D
Yeah, she probably should have, just so they wouldn't shove her
to the side. But even in HBP, when the book had been out for
years, they still gave her crap lines

"Open up, you" >:(
I mean who in their right mind would say that?!
Pretty much the only Ginny-esque thing she did (apart from
Quidditch) was chase Harry into the wheat field.
