Would you ever want an Episode 7?

Focusing on Luke's and Han and Leias kids, it could be set far
enough after Episode 6 to allow the original actors to return,
although they all look pretty terrible now.
Based on my extremely limited knowledge on the Extended Universe
there could be potential for some good story.
I don't really think it would work as a movie, but I thought
once the Clone Wars animated series finished it would be pretty
cool for them to make new series in the same style set in this
time. What do you think?

Only way I can see this working is as a TV show, maybe an
animated one. At least if it's animated you won't see how old
the actors look (if Lucas could even get them on board for the
project, that is).

The extended universe story ends up being extremely, terribly
depressing.
Basically one of Han and Leia's kids dies fighting some
kind of alien invasion force, one of their twins turns into a
Sith lord, murders Luke's wife and ends up getting killed in a
lightsaber duel by his own sister. Oh, and Chewbacca
dies.
So no I don't think I want to see any of that. :-[

If you were going to continue Star Wars you'd go backwards not
forwards. The EU is much more interesting pre-Phantom Menace.
TOR is sort of doing it now with the war between the Sith and
the Jedi and the struggle for power in the galaxy, that's where
you'd go for your stories. It separates it enough from the
series to introduce entirely new characters.
Also, you could explore Darth Plagueis the Wise and how he
learned to manipulate medichlorians to create life (hence how
Anakin was born).
The reason EU past Return of the Jedi wouldn't work is that it's
too convoluted. The marriage between Han and Leia and Luke's
eventual marriage totally just sucks balls because it's way
better to imagine those things for yourself after Endor. You
already have your happy ending, don't mess with it. EU thinks
too hard about the implications of the defeat of the empire and
the rise of a really small fledgling republic. It's interesting
but when your main focus is still on Luke, Han, and Leia it kind
of sucks because their stories are for all intents and purposes
over (or at least they should be)... and as Hermes said the
familial bullshit that's put into that is depressing and just
too soap opera-esque for my taste.

Wow Hermes I had no idea how sh't it gets post-Return of the
Jedi, I think they would probably change the story of they ever
turned it into a film series or animated series, otherwise yeah
I think the best thing would be to leave it alone.
I agree going backwards seems like a good option, I really like
the story of Kotor and I would love to play The old republic for
the story if it wasn't a bloody mmo.
I hope they eventually make that live-action show in between
Episode 3 and 4, for some reason I'm really interested in that
time period of the series.
That was from the comics, I believe, so I don't think
the stories were Lucas approved. There is a Cracked article on
it and there is some crazy post-Return of the Jedi comics. One
story out there has Luke and Leia in a relationship (but that
was after A New Hope, and before Epire Strikes Back). Another
one I heard of (which isn't Lucas approved) where someone found
Luke's severed hand and cloned him from it. They all seem
fan-fiction to me anyway.

The Luke/Leia relationship you're talking about was a prior
draft of the OT that had Luke and Leia romantically linked with
Luke discovering the identity of his twin sister during either
Return of the Jedi or a seventh Star Wars movie. In this case
the OT would have stretched passed ROTJ into the Expanded
Universe, but Lucas felt that he could accomplish the family
story of the Skywalkers and the demise of the Empire within
three movies. Lucas has stated that the story is about the
Skywalkers, Luke and Anakin, and once we have the demise of
Anakin and peace is made between the two of them the story is
complete.
The comics, books, and video games are ALL Lucas approved. This
makes them canon. The stuff Hermes is talking about is canon
because it's based off the novels and comics.

... I'm talking about what happens in the novels. A bunch of the
novels, all of which I'm pretty sure have to be Lucas-approved
in order not to get, you know, sued.

They are Lucas approved. They're marketed and distributed by
LucasFilm ltd and in most cases predate the prequel trilogy. I
remember boys reading them when I was in elementary school and
I'm pretty sure they go back further than that. FYI - the comics
are also under this umbrella.
I had a few when I was younger and any fan worth his/her salt
knew prior to the new trilogy how Anakin fell into lava on
Mustafar after dueling with Obi Wan.... they bridged multiple
time periods of the Star Wars universe.

I've been saying the same stuff for HP and I'd quote the same
here. I'd love a new story set in the same universe but with new
characters who are completley unrelated to the previous ones.
