David Yates is making a Doctor Who movie.

I'm aware this will probably be moved, but no one's gone on the
Doctor Who boards in weeks and this is pretty big news, so I'm
posting it here. Yates is going to be making a movie that's a
separate entity from the TV show. I'm VERY curious as to how
this is gonna turn out.

Wow - thanks for posting!
By separate, does that mean like a full-length film with
different actors? Like someone else playing the Doctor (not Matt
Smith)? Or Smith playing in a "big screen" movie?
And does that mean it will be a "self-contained" movie so any
casual moviegoer who has never seen DW could follow along? Kind
of like a seperate, stand alone movie long episode?
Sorry - I'm extremely excited to hear this. Obviously I have a
lot of questions about what they mean by this :D
EDIT:
Some of my questions have been answered in this article:
'Doctor Who' Movie Announced By 'Harry Potter' Director
David Yates
The man who brought you the final adventures of the Boy Who
Lived is about to pay a visit to the Doctor.
Director David Yates, who stepped behind the camera for the
final four installments of the "Harry Potter" series including
the two-part "Deathly Hallows" finale, is teaming with BBC to
adapt another major franchise for the big-screen in the form of
"Doctor Who," reports Variety.
The details are still murky at the moment, but here's what we do
know…
» "The notion of the time-travelling Time Lord is such a strong
one, because you can express story and drama in any dimension or
time," Yates said of his attraction to the Doctor, adding: "It
needs quite a radical transformation to take it into the bigger
arena."
» Yates' take on "Who" will have nothing to do with the Time
Lord's previous televised adventures: "Russell T. Davies and
then Steven Moffat have done their own transformations, which
were fantastic, but we have to put that aside and start from
scratch."
» It's going to take "two to three years to get it right," Yates
said, indicating that production on "Who" is still a ways away.
He added that the search is currently on for writers to tackle
the property, and he's not closed off to an American's take. "We
want a British sensibility, but having said that, Steve Kloves
wrote the Potter films and captured that British sensibility
perfectly, so we are looking at American writers too," he said.
To summarize: Yates is directing a "Who" movie that will be "a
completely fresh approach" and won't follow the TV series, no
writers have been hired yet, and we're about two-three years
away from getting it "right." In other words, don't expect
casting announcements anytime soon.
That said, even though there's no connection to the current
"Who" continuity, there is a common "Potter" thread between
Yates and "Goblet of Fire" actor David Tennant, who played the
Tenth Doctor for many years. Just putting that out
there.
Hmm, now I'm even more interested in how they're going to do
this. After reading this, will any future DW episodes (if DW is
still going after the movie's release) have anything to do with
my movie? Judging by this, II'll say that it's going to be
completely standalone, and won't have anything to do with future
DW mythology.

I'm of half mind on this. On the one hand I'm like "OH HALE NAW.
YOU MESSED WITH HP LEAVE MY DW ALONE" But on the other
hand.....theres much more flexibility with DW canon and DH2 was
a really well made film. We'll see.

That is awesome. I'm definitely looking forward to it.
The difference is that DW HAS been rebooted in the past. And
it's only every been on TV, so it's always been visual. There's
no one there to argue about cannon eye colors and layouts and
whatnot (although I'm SURE people will find something to b!tch
about).
Anyway, definitely looking forward to this. I'm a fan of Yates'
take on HP (and I was really excited when I thought he was going
to do The Stand before Ben Affleck snatched that), so I think
it'll be interesting.

I always thought that a Doctor Who movie would be seperate from
the series.
I remember hearing that Hugh Grant would play the Doctor at some
point. Recently, and I know he is quite a bit over used, I was
thinking that Jonny Depp would be good, especially if they go
the "American"route. Fresh blood works for the Doctor on
television so they could do that.
Anyway, they already have a Doctor Who movie series, its called
James Bond.
Just kidding! My brothers and I jokingly call Bond a
Time Lord.

I'm sorry but Hugh Grant or Johnny Depp would be awful. Hugh
Grant plays himself in everything he does, and while Depp plays
quirky characters well, I can't see him as the Doctor. At all.
If the movie is going to go with a bigger name, I'd personally
love to see Simon Pegg do it.

Yeah - I agree with Steal. I don't like the idea of Grant or
Depp playing. I hate when they try to cast "big names" for the
main role just because they're "big names" and not because
they're be a good fit as the actual character.
