This is my favorite book
By: magic_is_might Date: August 29, 2011, 9:08 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
This book ties with GoF as my favorite HP book. A lot of people
disagree because everyone hates "angst-y" and "angry" Harry.
Plus, many feel it's too long and could of been edited down.
I have a few reasons why this is shares the top of my list.
1. I mentioned that this book shares the top of my list with
GoF. I love the noticeable change of tone in JKR's writing in
GoF/OotP. I love the darker feel to these 2 books. They're
grittier, darker - a realistic change to reflect the current
times and mood of the Wizarding World at that time. JKR wasn't
afraid to take her books "to the next level"; even now, people
still criticize how the books didn't remain "childlike",
"happy", and "whimsical" ::)
2. I grew up with these books, as did many other Potter fans,
and I was about Harry's age during OotP. So I could relate what
Harry was feeling. Sure, it's not an exact comparison since it
wasn't like I was being pursued by a Dark Lord and being
isolated by friends in another world, but I could at least
understand what he was feeling. We see more of Harry's internal
struggles.
3. I loved the whole rebellion/Dumbledore's Army plot line.
Students are not afraid to rebel against the Ministry when it
was acting out of its place.
4. I love that JKR was not afraid to bring politics into the
mix. I love that we get to see more about how the Ministry
works, we get to see how politics work in the magical world, and
we even get to see (well, visualize ;)) the Ministry.
5. To relate back to "angst-y" Harry - Harry is not a perfect
character. JKR's characters are rich, flawed, multi-dimensional,
in short - realistic. We see more about our favorite characters
flaws. We may not like the flaws, but that's what makes them
even more relatable - we can see ourselves in the characters.
People hate how Harry acted, and I agree that he was an asshat
at times, but that's what makes us love Jo's story - that
they're so realistically written that the audience can even get
irritated at the main character. If he was perfect, then he'd be
nothing more than a Gary-Stu.
6. One of my favorite scenes that is the battle at the Ministry
of Magic.
7. Voldemort vs. Dumbledore
8. The relationships of the characters become more defined and
complex (ie Dumbledore/Harry, Hermione/Ron, etc).
9. Sure, JKR killed off Cedric Diggory in GoF, but it's in this
book that she's not afraid to kill off a more beloved character
- Sirius. And does not hesitate to do so for the rest of the
book. The series would not be as realistic and impactful if
important and beloved characters didn't die. It reflects real
life. Death does not spare "good" people in real life. And I
love that JKR demonstrates this.
10. Our favorite trio are not little kids anymore. They're
growing up and maturing (and I'm thankful that I was able to
grow up with them too). The wizarding world is almost at a state
of war. The Ministry is becoming too powerful and controlling.
Hence why the story is not "childish" anymore. It can't be. Real
life is not happy and whimsical. The trio are facing real life
problems. If they weren't, well, Jo's world and characters would
be unrealistic.
11. The Wizarding World is becoming more complex. I already
mentioned the Ministry and the politics on the books. We also
see much more about what's going on behind the scenes of the
magical world.
I'm sure there are a few more reasons, but these are the main
ones. If anyone disagrees/agrees, I'd love to hear your opinion
on it.

Completely agree.
Funnily enough, it was my least favourite book for so long, but
then I reread it one day and just really appreciated the length
of it. I loved hearing all the small details of the world, it
really allowed you to become immersed in the story and made the
final battle so much more engaging as you'd been building up to
it for so long.
This is one of the reasons the movie version isn't the best, it
was too quick and fast paced, if it had allowed some room to
breathe and just enjoy the surroundings it could've been
perfect. That said it's my favourite film under DH.

I also really like this book, the underground student rebellion
was the coolest thing I'd ever read about at age 8 and it's
still awesome!
When I'm listing my favorites it's usually like 4th, but when I
actually read it I remember just how good it really is

It's my favourite too. I love angsty Harry, I always completely
related to the way he was feeling. I feel this was the first
book to really look into the wizarding world, and the political
intricacies of that world beyond Hogwarts and I love that. It's
one of my favourite aspects of the series, and OOTP goes into it
the most.

Yeah, this is without a doubt my favorite. I love how long it is
and all the information we learn. And I LOVE the rebellion. That
was just cool as shit. I love how the trio are coming-to-age in
it. It's just awesome for all the reasons you've already said.
I never understood why people were annoyed with angsty-Harry.
Well... I understand how it'd be annoying, but it's not
unrealistic. People expected Harry to be rainbows and
butterflies after what he went through the previous year
apparently. Anyone who's been a teenager should know that we can
get a little angsty and annoying. I know I'm definitely guilty
of this. ;D
It's funny though cause I actually didn't like Goblet of Fire
nearly as much as Order of the Phoenix or Prisoner of Azkaban,
for that matter. I think I'd rank it either my third or second
least favorite - which is not to say I didn't like it, it just
wasn't as interesting to me as its predecessor and succesor.

I was going to start this topic, but you already did. I LOVE
this book. I love everything about it. How much darker it is,
the intro to Luna, the rebellion, everyone against Harry. I
just love it all. And then I love the confrontation at the end.
And not really between Voldemort and Dumbledore, but with
Harry, Ron, Hermione, Neville, GInny, Luna. I just thought it
was cool all the rooms they went in to. It had a different feel
to it then the rest of the books.

I know. Although, Hermione is actually my favorite character.
Luna is my second favorite, though.

Same here! Hermione is also my favorite character because she
reminds me a lot of myself - the good and the bad.
