Anyone have a theory as to why ...

... Critics and the general public all seem to love this film,
but so many fans are divided?

Critics and the general public love this film? Hmm, didn't know
that. Anyway, it's probably because this is the most 'fun' and
'entertaining' movie; it's got tons of action, some romance, a
lot of humor, yet still manages to be dark and adult. I think
the fans aren't so fond of it because it's a rather poor
adaptation (they cut out some important stuff, IIRC) with a weak
script, characters acting out-of-character, and some of the
worst acting from most of the cast.

Youbex, you hit the nail on the head.

I agree with what Youbex said. But for me this is the only Harry
Potter film that I hate, like, genuinely cannot bear to watch.
The main reason is because of the script, also the acting and
delivery of certain lines. The dialogue is awful for the most
part, full of cringeworthy, awkward and unfunny (to me, anyway)
humour. Some examples:
KRUM KRUM KRUM
"There's no one like Krum! He's like a bird the way he rides the
wind! He's more than an athlete! He's an artist."
"I think you're in love, Ron."
"Victor, I love you! Victor, I do..." etc
Dan's awkward delivery "When we're apart my heart beats only for
you!"
That scene...is painful for me to watch. I'm sure a lot of
people enjoy it and find it funny, but it sets my teeth on edge.
Ron and Harry's fighting / arguing. :”You're a right foul git,
you know that?” etc it just doesn't feel right.
Moaning Myrtle.
And when Ron receives his dress robes: "Well, it does match your
eyes. Is there a bonnet? Ah ha!" - oh, Dan.
"Oh my god! I've killed Harry Potter!"
Cedric Diggory has just been murdered: "Do you think we'll ever
just have a quiet year at Hogwarts?" NO LOL.
David Tennant. (I am a fan of his...but not in this.) The whole
Barty Crouch storyline...
There are so many more small moments like these which irk me in
the film. I probably seem nitpicky haha, but honestly they all
add up and ruin the film for me.

Its odd to me that so many people love it. I get that it has
action and humor, but so much of it is awkward and over the top.
I feel like most of GoF was trying way too hard. But what it was
trying for, I cannot say. Which is why it's kind of awkward to
me.
Plus, like others said, it is fulled with OoC moments and it's
just a poor adaptation.
And the hair. Don't get me started on the hair.
However, it did have its humorous moments that don't really
bother me. I actually laugh at Neville when he says, "I killed
Harry Potter!" and Ginny actually has some really funny
moments/lines. There are a few others I can think of. But they
are far outweighed by its drawbacks.

I agree with the others. I did love the humor but there's
something about it that feels... I dunno. It was also the first
HP that had me whining about most of the new casting choices.

I don't mind it, right up until the graveyard scene. It's
supposed to be all tense but really it's just laughable and I
really have to cover my eyes. Especially when Voldemort says 'I
can touch you.....NOWWWW.' Ugh.
I don't mind the rest of the film, though.

[/quote] I know what you mean. For the most part I like Ralph
Fiennes as Voldemort, but sometimes I wonder what the hell he is
doing. Like when Harry escapes the graveyard, and we get the
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
That's TRBL you knucklehead!

That was Newell, not Fiennes though.
