          Afloat (open)

Sometimes the sea can wash away our sorrows. She floated, eyes
closed, skin darkened to the water's hue, and alone with her
thoughts. She does not tether herself to anything, the walls
would keep her from drifting out to sea..but in reality the
waves pushed her towards the shore more often than not..she
didn't care ... the sea was draining her away and that's all she
       asked of it..

Mannix was out of the house hunting down materials and sending
them to the house. After do so, he wandered off the main road to
stand on a hilside and look at the port. It was a beautiful
night, the moon shining brightly. It seemed to shimmer across
the water. Strangely there seemed to be something dark in the
middle of the shimmering water. Curious he walked down the path
toward the sea. Grass gave in to rock which gave in to grass
again and then sand as he stepped onto the actual beach.
He took off his sandals and then his robe leaving him quite
dressed but able to go up to his knees before soaking his
clothes. Then he walked closer to the water, stopping and
sitting in cool sand so the watr licked at his feet but no
higher, not yet. He watched the black floating thing. His auspex
had already told him who it was. But he had been quiet. Up till
       now..
"Well, that is the most interesting mermaid I have ever seen."

She knew his voice the moment he spoke
"And just how many mermaids have you seen, pretty boy?...and if,
as I suspect, that answer is none, how do you know I am not a
siren here to lure sailors to their deaths?"
She sunk under the water momentarily to wash back her hair. She
stood and walked the short distance to where he sat
"...and what are you doing out tonight....and where is Lady
       Petra and the kits?"

He chuckled as he watched her. It was kind of hard to tell what
she was wearing in the dark. Her skin was strangely black. He
might have reacted to it if he hadn't seen it before. Despite
his best efforts he had looked in her direction closely and
noted the state of her undress. So, he just pretended he didn't.
though some voice in the back of his head said she was fairly
       pleasant to look at.
"Many records of mermaids say sirens are mermaids. Just a
thought. Should I fear my death?"
Oh.. well now he had no way to avoid noticing. He looked
around.. no clothes to hand her close by.
"I was purchasing art materials when I noticed something in the
water. If I am lucky, she and the kits and our new family member
are back at home. More likely they are going to be hiding in the
grass back there shortly. we will have to see. I am not sure
       Alice can keep up though."

       She chuckled,
"Many records say many things.....Are you a sailor as well as an
ex-monk and artist?....Do you fear death?...or some deaths more
       than others?..."
She crouched down in the sand beside him
"I see. You have an Alice now? It sounds as if your haven is
becoming Mannix's home for wayward girls. Where did you acquire
       this one?"

       Mannix raised an eyebrow.
"No, just an appreciator of obscure texts and stories. Is it
surprising that I have read many books? Hmm, I do not know about
fearing a particular form of death. Fire seems unpleasant. I
more fear being left permanently wounded, a reasonable fear for
someone who should heal every night."
She sat next to him and he picked up a small rock, throwing it
       far into the ocean.
"I am starting to wonder if I am not hosting just such a house.
I heard the same comment from Lady Alexi.. the day after she
brought Alice to me. Alice looks 12. So at least I am moving in
the right direction. Of course it turns out she is older than
she appears though she swears she is no ghoul. And she knows way
too much about our type. More than I do. She is definitely a
surprise. And she has been miserable. I am hoping I can giver
       her a better life."

       She laughed
"That you have read many books and obscure texts is the one
thing that does not surprise me when it comes to you. Everything
       else is a mystery."
She laid back on the sand and looked up at the sky. Her state
undress did not seem to matter to her at all, Mannix did not
seem to care, so she did not bother to gather her linens from
under the nearby rock. Besides , she would rather let the air
dry her skin before wrapping her body again.
"Lady Alexia ... I need to get back to see her about her
gallery.... Anyway, wayward seems to be the least issue ...
Petra is precocious and this new one is older than she looks and
knows too much about our kind? ... Perhaps you should be wary of
that threat to our existence. I'll have to remember to be
careful of gifts from Lady Alexia."
She rolled to her side and propped her head on one arm.
"You could bring her round to meet Andrea, perhaps she will know
what your girl is, she's quite ...educated in these matters."
She sat up suddenly and made a high pitched whistle, she cocked
her head to listen then smiled as the sound of something large
came barreling through the beach grass. They pounded across the
sand each carrying half of what looked to be a hare .....
Phobos' half trailing entrails across the sand as he ran. They
stopped in front of her dropping their prize. She rubbed their
chest as she spoke to them
"Yes, it's a lovely snack...but stay nearby. My bodyguards ...
       bloody food whores."
She lay back down as the pair began crunching their treat inches
from her head. She grinned and chuckled then switched
topics...as if reminded of something with her next question...
"So Lord Mannix...what do you know of an archer in the city
       killing people?"

Amaris laughed a lot more than he remembered. It wasm't a bad
       thing.
"OOh, I am a mystery. Good to know. Some day maybe you will get
a chance to find out more. Everyone loves a good mystery."
He smiled wondering what the other vampire would think of his
drawings. She had always been a little dismissive of his
       illustrations.
"Petra is precocious. But she is learning a lot as well. She
really does have the sweetest heart. As for Alice, I will make
sure she doesn't betray our secrets. I am responsible for her.
Hmm, Andrea, that is one of your maids, isn't it?"
It somehow didn't surprise him that her people were experts in
their own fields, whatever those might be. Then she called the
same two huge dogs she had around the other night. He smiled to
       look at them.
"There is a quote about workers and food in the bible but I
think I will feign to forget what it is so you are not tempted
to look at me with disappointment in your eyes."
       Then she DID surprise him.
"How did you find out about the Archer?"

"Be careful what you say ... mysteries are weakness for me..."
She smiled sweetly at him then sat up
"...you could tell me about your mysteries... or I could take
you apart and see if I can find them....no, you should tell
       me...someday."
She listened to his opinion on the girls and smiled, nodding
"Andrea is one of my girls...a ghoul of extraordinary
talents...to call he a maid is an insult - one you likely utter
only once in her presence. But she is sweet and loves children,
so Petra will charm her undoubtedly."
She looked almost hurt by his next words
"Lord Mannix, I would not look at you with disappointment... I
may giggle quietly and mumble something about once a monk always
       a monk....but never in disappointment."
The pale grin split her face like a crescent moon in the night
sky. She spun to lay her head on his stomach and look up his
chest at him. Now she had a Mannix pillow to hold her head up,
       she looked pleased..
"I was with that delicious Rus guard ..he was teaching me to use
a bow... perfecting my stance and such...Anyway, we were in his
chambers when the whores his friend had sent over - which he
pawned off on his mentor-roommate-warrior-friend whatever - were
leaving. The archer nailed their skulls to the gate and got the
old warrior in the shoulder. I got them loose of the gate and
rolled them into the street before the guards arrived...healed
up the old man ... had a long discussion with Mikhail about
it...then took the arrow I pulled from the old warrior's
shoulder to Thomas...and then there was the one that was shot at
me ... The edges are different from the ones that hit a mark...
they have a unique edging..some sort of crystal like substance
that seems to let it cut easier...an so...."
She pointed to the wolves now licking the last of their snack
       from their lips.
       "...tah-dah...body guards."

Amaris was changing again. She started with something
flirtatious and almost sweet. And then with an even sweeter
smile she threatened him in a way that actually haunted his
dreams. The idea of being torn apart but still living sent a
chill down his spine. And then she went back to somewhat normal.
If that wasn't enough, she was now laying her head on his
stomach. A nude, wet, casual and playful Amaris was using him as
a pillow. If he was a normal human male it would have been
embarrassing. As it was, Mannix face had a look that was only
missing a change in color to be a good strong blushing. Once
again in the company of Amaris he was glad he controlled the
flow of blood in his body. The new Amaris..or rather the new new
new Amaris. Her different personalities were starting to confuse
       him.
That was another thing. He didn't used to think about blood flow
and other processes of his body. But that was the fault of
another woman who's name started with A.. not Amaris.
"Hmm, well it would be good for them to meet other people, and
Petra really likes you. And Petrta could charm anyone I think,
with that sweet disposition of hers."
The thought of a giggling, wet naked Amaris was now in his head
and it confused him even more. God bless controlled blood flow.
Hallelujah. Fortunately all the surprises she threw at him, all
the manner changes was slowly preparing him, making him as not
easy to shock. Well, then she told the story of the pleasure
girls and her fling with the guard and the archer and everything
becoming a story the old Amaris would never have experienced mch
       less spoken to him about.
"Why Amaris, did you just make a pun or a double entendre? Or
rather several, or maybe both. In the last hundred plus years I
have made your acquaintance I can clearly state I have never
been so unsure of what in the seventh level of the Abyss is
       going on right now. Anyway.."
Deep breath, relax. Hell, he just gave in to the madness.
'Well, your Gangrel lover is very protective. Hopefully he wont
walk up and see us enjoying the beach and decide I need body
parts removed. I would miss them very much. So, I do not know
much about the Archer, other than witnessing them illing a poor
old lady. It's not much of a story but it is yours if you wish."
