Mannix shook his head and frowned.
"No matter what, you are not going back out on the streets to
live. I would never throw you away. I never throw family. The
question is, what do you want?"
His manner was soft and kind. He didn't talk to her as if she
was a child. He talked to her as an individual, as a person.

He chuckled at her answer. She was young, about 10. Even with as
much of the world as she had seen at this point she thought like
a child.
"No, not physical wants like a roof or food. You are young still
and you just got here so you have plenty of time to think about
things. But you said what I wanted you to be. what matters is
what you want to be. I want you happy, and satisfied with your
life, and passionate about something. Don't worry, you have
plenty of time to find those things. But remember, ou can talk
to me about everything, especially what you feel. Hmm, pick up
the slate and chalk. We need to go downstairs for a minute."

"well, the first night you called me master. But I am getting a
feeling that isn't what you want. Ask, fi there is something you
wish to call me. Do not be afraid. The worst I will do is say
no. It will not effect the way I feel about you."

"You can call me father if you wish. For now, you are as my
daughter. With time you will learn of my family and have to
decide if you want to be known as my daughter to the world at
