Shopping between fragrances and housewares(open)

Mannix had gotten up early and headed out to the market. He had
let Lady Alexia know he would be by a little later tonight, so
he could do some chores early in the evening. He walked casually
starting with the market in the beginning of the Forum of
Augustation. The whole place smelled amazing and yet powerful.
He walked, looking at the people there, at those shopping. He
would look at those spending time in the forum enjoying the
smells as well. He was looking, for someone in his life and
someone for his daughters. He had been thinking about this for a
while and even approached one person, but now he was looking in
earnest.

Who he was approaching was up to him and what he was actually

Mannix had thought about this for a while. Certain things seemed
important. The woman could not be currently married or a slave.
They had to be older, say the mid twenties at least. Widow's
were fine.
There were some things that were required but hard to measure
without knowing them. Kind, intelligent, caring, humorous,
adaptable. But these are so hard to quantify. He would look for
style without overwhelming vanity.
He sighed, realizing it was probably an impossible mission. He
could see a matchmaker, or just get a nanny till he found
someone. But he was here, he might as well see what was out
there.

A pale arm slipped around his waist from behind as something
furry scurried onto his shoulder and around his neck ... a small
wet nose snuffled inside his ear muffling Amaris' voice
"Lord Mannix ...how lovely to see you again. Adestria,
behave....take your nose out of Lord Mannix's ear..."

He jumped just a little at the unexpected touch not to mention
the wet willy suddenly happening to his ear.
"Lady Amaris, a pleasure and a surprise. You friend here seems
to like me. She must be very discerning. How are you doing this
evening?"
He looked at Amaris just glad the animal on his shoulder hadn't
nibbled anything off. Animals didn't tend to like him.

"She's very friendly...even more so if you have food or
something that interests her. "
Smiling she pulled what looked like a snail from a packet and
offered it to Adestria, and she sat on his shoulder and crunched
away as Amaris took his arm and grinned
"Now, I am doing fine, but wondering ...what brings you here
among the perfumes and household items?"

He looked at the strange animal and smiled. It was strange to
have an animal not bite him and hiss. Mannix was happy enough to
have Amaris arm on his. It was nice to have a friend.
"I am looking forsomeone special. My daughters need someone
around when I am not around. Someone who can be kind but firm,
someone who can balance out the influence I am. A surrogate
mother of sorts, but not a slave or someone who is going to use
them against me. They will have to be able to be part of your
family. I thought I might find someone who was intelligent,
feminine and yet good in the home and kitchen. I might be going
abut this all wrong but this seemed a more practical place to
start than a party or a church."

She grinned
"Oh...I see Natalya has not come to see you yet. Well, she will
soon. We know a girl who needs a job. She's very sweet and soft
spoken, she loves children and has always wanted a family, and
she has recently had a bad experience that has made her consider
joining the convent. We have tried to talk her out of such
nonsense but she feels there is no hope left for her...
She handed Adestria another fig
"..but that is not true. She's still young and a family is not
out of the question. We think she would be perfect for your
household. Your girls are both precocious enough to not need
coddling ...just ...direction. And we think Petra would do her a
world of good. One of us will bring her around to meet you and
the girls in a day or so.."
And thus Mannix got his first dose of being herded by Amaris and
Natalya .... otherwise know as the Mikhail treatment..or just
"Mikhail-ing".

He blinked as he listened to Amaris. At first he was curious,
but the further and further she went the more he realized he was
being set up. Why did the women in this city keep sending him
broken girls?
"Hmm, well if she needs a home, I have no problem with trying to
help her. We have need of someone else in the house. Why does
she feel there is no hope? From the way you speak it sounds as
if the girl was brutalized by some men."
Yeah, Petra did seem to have a healing effect on people, at
least their psyche.

She smiled
"Because she was. Badly enough that all we have been able to
discern is that she was held captive in a basement or dungeon of
some sort, her captors spent their time defiling her body and
violating her mind...we do not know how long the held her or
why...she only remembers they had accents similar to Mikhails.
She does not recall ever seeing their faces...if she escaped or
was set free...or have any idea why someone would do this to
her."
She smiled up at Mannix
"She does not need a convent to make her more afraid of the
world, she needs time to heal and learn to trust again. You are
kind and patient, beautiful and refined...nothing like the man
who abused her. Your Petra can help her see the world through
the eyes of a child again, can help her see there is hope and
goodness left in the world. In turn she can help your girls as
they transition into womanhood, can teach them all the things
they will need to know as women... and you can get back to doing
Mannix things ...instead of searching for a woman to mother your
girls."
