brake caliper locked on. How do you get it to release?

I haven't fitted my brake caliper. I am just fiddling with it,
but the pads have closed the gap but not released! How do you
       get them to release?

I prised the gap open with a flat screwdriver and found the
wedge which came with it and put it back in. Presumably it is
not designed to be activated without a disc in the gap? I guess
the over-closing blocked a port or something?
       I would welcome any advice

You’re right. They only move a small distance normally so
that’s the only retraction you get. The reservoir will have
just put in more fluid to “take up the gap” so moves the resting
       position forward each time.
As an example, for the Gemini master cylinder and Grimeca
       caliper:
The cross sectional area of the master cylinder is 1.33 sq.cm
The csa of the caliper is 26.4 sq.cm
So moving the master cylinder piston 20mm will only move the
       caliper pistons 1mm

       Thank you, Stefan.
This set-up was one recommended by Chris Loader, which comes
pre-bled, with a reservoir pre-fitted and filled. I got the disc
       and carrier from Gemini.[img][/img]
When you say its resting position moves forward each time, are
you saying that as you use it you are distributing the oil in a
way that wasn't adjusted by the manufacturer; that using it beds
       it in?

Have a Google for some videos that explain single circuit brake
       master cylinder.
The first part of the stroke of the master cylinder is still
connected to the reservoir so that the reservoir can do its job
       of keeping fluid topped up.
When you push the calliper pistons back in, it slowly transfers
       fluid back into the reservoir.
In short, yes, it’ll settle down. Just leave the wedges in
until you’re ready to install so you don’t damage or dislodge
       the calliper piston seals.
BTW, when you connect your longer hose from the master cylinder
to the brake calliper you will have to bleed the system.
