spoke ripped out of rim on pit bike wheel
By: Tinworm Date: August 16, 2022, 2:31 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
I dropped a pit bike wheel. I had a propped things up to see
what they'd look like and everything fell off the table, when I
knocked it. A spoke on one wheel buckled and pulled out of the
rim.
see picture [img][/img]
Bit discouraged by how easily that rim opened up, but can
anything be done? Hoping that I don't have to replace the whole
wheel, but how would a replacement spoke be retained? Anyone
ever been able to do a repair?

If there is enough metal on the rim around the spoke hole to
pein back over and maybe a thin washer shaped to the dimple on
the outside.

Worth a try. Hope my welding can be dialed back sufficiently.
That steel seems pretty puny.

You could always braze it rather than welding, less chance of
scrapping the rim.

Not in my skill-set, unfortunately. And not got the kit, but I
am sure you are right that it'd be less aggressive, Chris. I
will look into whether I know anyone who might be able to do it
for me, locally.

Brazing is an excellent and very these days undervalued system
of joining metal.
The lower temperatures mean less distortion...heck they even
used to braze racing
car chassis together.

The rim will be easy to heat, so all you need is a reasonable
size blowlamp, brazing rods and flux, it's effectively a hard
soldering process.

I think you are right, Chris. I am going to give it a go. I just
took it over to my friendly motorbike repair man (a flying mate)
and he took the tyre back off. I will get some spokes and a
brazing rod and give it a go. Cheers for the link etc

You're welcome, apply the flux and get the rim up to temperature
before applying the rod, it really is just like soldering at a
higher temperature.

I got the impression the flux is built in to the rod?
