Re: 1932 Strupp Miller Special

Some more painfully slow progress, I've spent too long getting
other things to work recently and only just got back to the
Miller.
Hopefully the photo shows the route I'm going down to get drive
to the rear axle. The 90 degree gearbox has a 2.78:1 ratio so
other sprockets in the driveline can be quite small. I'm using a
go kart hub to join 2 axles together as the propshaft, then
trying to work out where to put the bearings so I have some room
in the car, but don't have too much bodywork sticking out the
side to shield the propshaft.
I'm tempted to put the torque converter straight onto the input
of the gearbox using some sort of adaptor but haven't found what
I'm looking for yet.
I think I may have worked out a solution to the steering box, I
ended up welding some 19mm tube to the splined end and hammered
it somewhat true. Let's hope it works well enough.

I may have run into a small issue. I've just been trial fitting
wheels onto the front axle to check things like ride height and
whatnot, and thought I'd measure my front track. It turns out
I'm 35mm(ish) over using pit bike wheels, 2.5" tyres, and a
standard gemini karts front axle. Has anyone else run into this
before and found a solution that doesn't involve shortening the
axle? Am I right in measuring from outside of tyre to outside of
tyre?
It's not the end of the world if I have to cut up the axle, I
was just hoping I've missed something obvious that would be a
touch quicker.

This can occur if you put the pit bike wheels on with the brake
caliper bolt holes outermost, turning the wheels bolt holes
innermost sometimes needs a little grinding of the inner
diameter of the hub to clear the Gemini upright. This might get
your track a little narrower

Track width is measured from centre of tread to centre of tread
and should not be over 38in(965mm) or 39.3in (1000mm) from out
side to out side of tyre if you want to measure that way. Hope
this helps.

Thank you both for the replies, I'll have a go at grinding the
faces back and removing the spacers I'd used to clear the
uprights. I think it'll gain me 10mm or so.
I'm used to track width being tyre centre to centre, but looking
at the regs, the measurement is from tyre outside faces which
seems quite hard to measure. After doing some grinding tomorrow
I'll remeasure and see where I get to, and stick to measuring
from centre to centre.
Thanks again

Spot on thank you. Really tidy job on your hub

I hacked away at the hubs this morning and it's all sorted now.
Thank you to all for the advice.
This is how it's looking so far, still got the tie rod, steering
link, trailing arm mounts, panhard rod, prop shaft bearings,
brake caliper mount, and possibly additional bearings closer to
the wheels on the rear axle as I'm not sure how much load the
bearings in the 90 degree gearbox can take. Plus everything I
haven't thought of like pedals and things
Then there's the cosmetic stuff, lots left to do but progress is
progress
