Electric start engine

Here's are rooky questions from total non-petrolhead -
What will I need extra if I buy an electric start engine?
Can I move the 'key' to the dash?
Does turning the key off class as a kill switch?
Being geriatric, the thought of pulling and pulling on a starter
cord doesn't appeal. I have one of those on one of my railway
locos and usually get one of the youngsters to start it.

We use genuine Honda engines on machines we build, we take the
key start box off and just extend the wiring to move it to a
more convenient location.
Not sure if the key counts as a kill switch in the world of
cycle karts but it would be easy to wire in an additional kill
switch if needed.

Thanks Mark. I'm sure the clones will work more or less the same
way. Do you extend the choke as well?
I presume you have a 12 volt battery somewhere.
Does the engine keep the battery charged?
All I know is that a car has a starter motor and a separate
alternator for the battery. How does that compare with the
electric start engines?
This is all basic stuff for people who have been around engines
for a while, but my engines mainly run on steam!

Yes you will need a battery David, it doesn't need to be large.
There's a second magnet on the flywheel that runs the charge
system.
As Mark says, just detach the system "box" and add in extension
wires. Doing anything else may (will) complicate things although
along the line you may well discard the box for something much
less clumsy.
Don't forget to cut off the low oil wire, usually yellow, which
comes out of the side/front of the crankcase otherwise you will
be wondering why you stop on nearly every corner as the oil
sloshes about.

I can get one ordered next week (supplier closed this week).

the crankcase" - I was wondering how easy that was to find
having read about it previously.
I've also read about 'taking off the governor' too. Where abouts
is that?

There are other more percussive ways to remove the governor but,
for the sake of your brand new castings...

That is a first rate guide Jim, thanks. Even I may be able to
follow it. However, before tackling that I think I shall get
used to my ck as built. Tweeking can come later once I've passed
35mph without 'accident'.
I bet there are lots of other good tips on that site too.
