       Absolutely right, David!
If you want to help people become builders, show them how, don't
do it for them (fish for life)
I am in the Light Aircraft Association which supports pilots in
building their own aeroplanes. They run day courses in key
skills, which are very, very popular. They are always very
       quickly booked up.
That's what would work well. But we are all spread out, so I
suggest people make links locally and share what they know.

I only offered to make some basic chassis because I thought it
may help people with less facilities. I am very fortunate to
have a pretty good workshop with lathes mills welders etc.
Not entirely sure what the difference is between someone buying
a chassis and as many people do on this forum buying a complete
front axle from Gemini. Rhys has shown that a front axle can be
made very easily in his thread, yet many choose to buy them.
I suspect as the hobby gets more popular someone will offer a
       basic chassis for sale anyway!

No offense intended, especially as I am a newcomer. I just
wouldn't like to see the day where people with money can just
slap a load of dosh down on the table and buy their way in.

Tinworm , I didn’t take offence just trying to point out that
the amount people make or buy varies massively at the moment
       anyway.
I enjoy the challenge of making things and have made as much as
I can for my kart including the leaf springs, stub axles, front
       axle etc etc.
Are people with limited facilities, skills and time being put
off by not having a chassis, the most difficult bit is the front
axle which is commonly bought anyway.
I have seen a few karts up for sale, so you can already buy in
if you want to. Should club membership then be limited to
people who have built the kart from scratch themselves, meaning
used karts would be very difficult to sell.
I guess clubs try to attract members because most clubs run more
successfully with more members, it would be great if there where
more kart track events spread across the country more regularly.
This will only happen when there are more members/karts.
Stretton is a 3 hour drive from me so I would love more local
events although I will happily travel.

In my humble opinion, a cyclekart is defined as 'self-built' -
'A Cyclekart should not cost more than $1750 to build in 2001
dollars (this is to avoid spending races where people start
hiring out parts and making things too nice; we're not making
show cars, and an element of scrounging adds to the fun).' from
  HTML http://www.cyclekarts.com/CycleKartSpecs.html.
I do think that the club should promote self build and possibly
bulk purchase of springs. After that, it is support (including
'build days') and advice with knowledge/sourcing being key
       elements.
Frankly, if folk haven't the time and/or inclination (all skills
can be learned) to build a ck (including scrounging favours to
get welding done) then perhaps cyclekarts are not for them.
The front axle will always be a problem for some - hence a ready
made from Gemini - but even that can be put together with stock
materials from ebay, a tame welder and a big hammer!
The 'garden shed with lots of buddies' is the way forward, I
feel. And that is the fundamental ethos and appeal of
       cyclekarts.
Okay, I'm a 'Johnny come lately to the party' so what do I know.

It's a great offer Mark, thank you! We'll be talking about some
of this stuff on Sat at the first committee meeting (but bear
with us as we're only just starting the club so lots of basics
       to get sorted).

A frequent response to enquiries of where to buy a -----(in this
case cyclecart) after being told they are self-build (same with
locos, and aeroplanes I guess) is "I wouldn't know where to
start" followed quickly by "I haven't got the
equipment/skills/time" which really means ???? "Can I buy
one"??? or "I'm not that serious", "I don't make stuff".
CK builders need a CAN DO attitude, a willingness to find out
and overcome any problems with the build. There is sufficient
documentation on the interweb to cover most eventualities, and
enough YouTube to show how - including rough beginners welds and
where to scrounge favours and scavenge bits (an old hand drill
for a steering box for example). Long may it stay so, with some
serious help and advice readily available.
Just fallen off my soapbox - need a snooze.
Quote from our build guide -
"CycleKarts are compact, lightweight, sports machines, styled to
       resemble pre-war racing
       cars.
They are home made by their drivers for the pursuit of classic
       motoring sporting
excitement. They are not built to be serious race machines or
show cars but purely for the
personal satisfaction and fun of driving a machine you've built
       yourself."

Absolutely. sprocket ratios and milled keys and wheel and tyre
sizes and bearings and and and...are all things that are new to
me. But nothing I can't work out with the advice of people here,
or thought Googling or going on YouTube.

A gentle reminder that we aim to be inclusive and welcoming.
Lets also remember that people get so many different things from
the hobby - some love a technical challenge, some love learning
about their inspiration vehicle, some love learning new skills,
for some it'll be the first thing they've ever built, for others
they will have a lifetime of building cars. If you're brand
new to building things, then I think a little support is not
       unreasonable.
Soapboxes are a great source of raw material for your cyclekart.
