Thanks Nick, The power train is a GX clone connected to a FNR
gearbox via a TAV which then drives a 55 tooth sprocket on the
axle.

Cool, is there an 8 tooth sprocket on the gearbox?

Thanks Ian and Nick, It's a 10 tooth on the gearbox which has a
1.3:1 ratio. This gives me 7.15:1 ratio from the TAV to the
axle. I can't remember the TAV ratios but I should get good
acceleration and top end with the motor revving at 5500rpm.

I want to try a different front suspension set up so I'm making
a Watts linkage.

To be honest from my ancient kit car experience a simple 4 bar
system works really well
[attach=1]. The Duttons only used 3 trailing links, two on one
side and only a lower one on the other side. These prevent the
axle from nosing up and down under acceleration and braking. To
location it laterally they had a transverse Panhard rod running
from the top of the axle on the side that only has a bottom
trailing arm to as far to the other side of the chassis as you
can get.
Unless you have high amounts of travel the lateral displacement
of a Panhard rod as opposed to a watts link doesn't amount to
very much. There are not a lot of people using live axles on
track cars now they are mainly the preserve or the off-road or
rock crawler setups. When you have 40cm of suspension travel a
watts link makes sense, if you only have 4 cm of travel, not so
much. The aim of the game was to keep the axle pointed at the
gearbox output nose under braking and acceleration and not let
it wiggle to the side under heavy cornering.
Chain drive brings other problems as you have to keep the chain
tension constant across the range of movement and I don't know
how the chains stay on when the axle is compressed on one side,
the drive sprocket would end up at a different angle to the axle
sprocket. that being said the GN chain setup works just fine
with trailing 1/4 elliptical springs and trailing arms to handle
the torque on acceleration or braking. It would be nice to know
what the racers that have aircraft engines fitted have had to do
to beef the system up.

The Boondoggle. Hopefully get it out for Stretton at the end of
march.

Here's my idea for a tea and biscuits trailer to bring along
with the Boondoggle. There will be a selection of teas including
posh ones like Tetley, Happy Shopper and Yorkshire. And for the
non connoisseur who'll drink any old ditch water, PG will be
available.

That is soooo sexy Jim. I bet you have trouble keeping your
hands off it! Can't wait to see this one hooning around a field.
(don't leave me alone with it though ;) )
