EXHAUST NOISE

Hi all, the CKGB Handbook does not specify a maximum noise limit
because each event may have its own limits. Therefore, we
simply recommend that you have a means of reducing your
cyclekarts noise level if a venue decrees that your cyclekart is
too loud.
Tim Wheater and I have "pinged" the noise meter at Stretton a
couple of times and been on the verge of being removed from the
track. Subsequently, we have both taken measures to reduce our
noise levels.
The attached document details noise checks we recently carried
out at Elvington. Points to note are:
* Noise is measured in Decibels and it is not a linear scale.
The background noise was 62db and the cyclekarts were in the
region of 85db to 105db. 85db is relatively quiet, whilst 105db
is very noisy. At this part of the scale 103db is roughly twice
as loud as 100db!!!
* Wind direction can affect the recorded noise and in this case
the cyclekarts were downwind of the noise meter.
* The noise level significantly drops over distance. Please
note that the levels were taken at varying distances, depending
on the line the driver was taking.
* The noise level generally increases as revs rise.
* A standard exhaust is roughly 80 to 83db. A debaffled
standard exhaust is about 85 to 95db. A custom pipe and
silencer is about 90 to 95db. An open pipe (or a cyclekart
where the silencer has fallen off!) is about 100 to 105db.
