VM22 Mikuni Carb tuning
By: Scotty Date: October 16, 2025, 12:05 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
With the help of a fellow Scottish member (Adrian) we, well for
we read Adrian, removed the governor from my Lifan LF212e engine
and I have added the clone VM22 Mikuni Carb. Now everything I
have read and watched suggests this Carb comes with a 98 Main
Jet and it should be replaced with a main jet between 115 and
135. The engine starts and runs well but as I am doing this on
the workbench with low revs, can anyone who has a similar
combination give feedback and/or recommend the best main jet
size they are using. I am trying to get as much advice as
possible from one and all as I don’t have access to “full on”
testing of the engine in the kart round a track.
Regards, Scotty (a.k.a Charlie S )

Hi Scotty, I have found the combination in the picture works as
well as your likely to get with a Mikuni clone, personally I
have moved away from them due to poor engineering.
Good luck Nick. keep in mind the main jet only comes into play
at the top end of rev range.
Pilot jet =tick over to 20% Needle jet 20-75% Main jet 75-100%.
Good luck Nick

Thank you Nick for the input, every bit helps given I know
nothing about them.

I had a 120 main, but it ran a bit rich, found 115 better for my
Hyundai engine.
Ran a 125 main with the Lifan engine which was Ok. Think its a
bit of trial and error to find what works best. I found the VM22
clone a bit of a pain in the arse with fuel leaks and lost track
time messing about with it, others have run them no problem. I
just did not get on with them so no longer use them.
Or it could be I was just rubbish at setting them up.

Granvillle, very helpful information as I fitted a 120 main jet
to the Carb. From what you and Nick have told me, plus all that
I have read, it would suggest that the Carb does give more
“bang” if you can get it right and that can take a bit of work
between the 3 forms of jetting plus the air/fuel mixer.
Winter is coming so this should give me the hours I need to get
it right.
Once again thank you both for the input and if you think you
might have any other suggestions please let me know.

Hi Scotty, I found the jets made in China to be very badly
machined. EBC jets made in England are far superior.
Cheers Nick
