gokart rear with peerless used
By: Mike Date: September 16, 2025, 3:44 pm

hi all,
there is this rear axle that is 970mm in width with a peerless
diff on looks like 100 series.
From what i've read on the forum this might be too short for the
cyclekart build. But just wanted to soundboard whether it might
work or if there's a way to extend or if the extensions just
won't be strong.

thanks again

This might be a long reply Mike.
The diff on Marketplace does indeed look like a Peerless 100
series diff, Peerless made the shafts for the diff body to suit
the application when the order was big enough so the shafts
could be anything, however, from the image, they look like the
1" shafts on the commonly available 36" long unit, or if you are
lucky, it will be the 1m version here...
HTML https://www.gardentractorspares.co.uk/peerless-gearbox-differential-universal-1-1-meter-100-120
Often the shafts place the diff body on the centreline of the
kart, so a jack shaft is often necessary to get the chain in the
right spot and keep the engine in the middle, in the states they
use a spacer to achieve this...

You do not need to use the full 1m track in our rules and
building a narrower cyclekart is allowed so a 1m axle would see
you with the track at the rear of about 910mm, Most of the USA
run on this length axle.
I have experimented with a cheaper version of the peerless 100
here and since posting this have has success in grafting on to
the 19mm shafts a hollow 30mm kart axle by reaming the cut axle
ends out, slotting the outer axle in two places and welding the
outer axle to the diff shafts through the slots...

This method gets the diff body anywhere you want it with a
little planning, the 30mm axle will not quite pass through the
pit bike wheels until you take a few thousands out of the hub -
a job of a few mins - 1090mm outside to outside would get you
the maximum track. 30mm hollow kart axles seem cheaper the
longer you buy them strangely...

The I.D. of the one I bought from the above supplier was just
over 18mm, I reamed out 125mm of the cut ends with a 19mm reamer
before cutting the diff axles to suit, slotting the axle and
welding through.
All for now.

this is all great jim thanks.
interesting about the cheaper diff.
would the length of the used axle i've linked end up having too
short a rear track width (it is 1" diameter and 36" length)?

You lose about 90mm of track to axle length Mike with pit bike
wheels and fixings, so 36" would give you a track of about 820mm
without some clever engineering fix for the length, as I said
earlier, a solution to align the drive cogs would also be
necessary.
Our Maximum track is 1m, but like speed limits on roads, less is
also acceptable. some of the CKGB karts are narrower track at
the rear than the front. It all depends upon what you are trying
to achieve with the cyclekart.
Hope this helps
