Braided brake hose. Possible issue.

For information and discussion.
Got back from Santa Pod after a great weekend of fun and frolics
but retired on the Sunday Afternoon with what I thought was
brake fade.
The Saturday saw one other cyclekart have brake issues. After
further investigation this morning of my issue it turns out to
be the braided hose near the caliper end that had failed on
mine. The other kart had issues with its braided hose too.
I am now tempted to replace the lot with copper or CuNiFe as I
have more faith in it.
The track at Santa Pod has a lot of braking for the corners and
I had a lot of track time (Think 4 litres of fuel). It is the
only track I have experienced this on so far.
My next kart will have metal lines.

Race bikes use braided steel brake hose, i would suggest the
source is the problem rather than braided hose. I took Jays out
the bin to dissect and inspect. It was bloody hot, caused all
sorts of problems especially with carburation.

As you know, I start with a secondhand go-kart and use the lines
that come with the kart as they are proven. Generally, these
are not long enough, so I position the master cylinder as far
forward as possible with the hoses, then have a long operating
rod to make up the difference. This generally puts the master
cylinder under your knee, which is an easy position for checking
and replenishment,

Hi Jim, most of the super bike race teams use Brembo hoses .

Hi Jim , how far from the calliper to the nearest support point?

About a 6 inch nick, cable tied to chassis, it failed near the
caliper, probably just a bad bit of kit. I had it made up as the
one off the shelf was too short at 2 meters.
Going all copper now, ordered tool from ebay.

I would NEVER use anything other than VENHILL POWERHOSE PLUS on
a kart or Cyclekart Hydraulic brake syatem.
Its a British product and available built to order, in 25mm
Increments up to about 3 meters.
(Its not expensive for a safety critical part).
My advice...never buy Chinese brake systems for racing
machines....it just isnt worth the risks involved WHEN it fails.
To be honest, neither would I use copper brake lines and olives
!!
This hot Humid weather will play havoc with carburettor settings
and a lot of kart engine seizures were reported last weekend at
kart races, through unstable fuel / carburation.
The fuel needs to be COOL, fuel tanks under the engine cover are
not the best when its this hot !

Jim, i had a similar issue to that on my first brake line, I
didn't have no issues with stopping but the outer sheathing
started to swell up with brake fluid, I changed it before it
failed but just chalked it up to a faulty part. Maybe the heat
from the calliper is the issue, I use a calliper off a Chinese
125cc scooter and the Gemini 4mm disk.
I think the main issue is the temperature of the day, and the
straight being just long enough to get some good speed up but
not long enough for enough cooling before needing to brake
again.
I think it was glazing my disk making me use them even harder
and getting everything hotter!
I just started to feel a bit of fade on sunday and stopped
straight away and they were fine after a cool.

We had similar issues Jay, mine faded then returned on the
Sunday morning but failed in the afternoon. there was no fluid
left in the reservoir when I got home. I will put it back in
metal as I have no rear suspension to warrant the flexible hose
and the automotive world relies upon metal lines to stop
millions of cars so it seems to make sense. My 2CV had copper
coils that wound like springs with the suspension movement in
the pivot point of the swing arm to get around the need for
braided hose at the back, that had over 80,000 miles on it when
the chassis snapped and the original coils were still working.
I am tempted to up the temperature rating of my brake fluid too
if I can find compatible.

Do you think it’s worth using drilled or slotted rotors?
