       tyres / wheels
By: EARWIG Date: June 25, 2025, 3:35 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
       hello all
I have a live axle on my kart and whilst illegal street testing
I find, when making a tightish U turn at the the end of the road
the kart wants to go straight on instead of turning unless I
reduce the speed to quite slow - no surprise there then !!!
I have fitted tyre retainers so I can reduce the pressure to
around 10psi which helps but I have been looking for a flat
profile tyre (safety mileage are too expensive ). Does anyone
       know of such a tyre.
I was also going to ask if it is possible to fit 3.25 tyres (max
allowed ) onto my 1.4 rims. However I noticed on a recent post
regarding Gemini kart wheels that the 1.4 Honda Cub wheels (the
standard so I thought ) are bit iffy and a 1.6. steel rim would
be better. Is a 1.6 x 17 wheel available or are we talking about
       building your own.
       kind regards
       Bri

Hi Bri. Do you have both wheels keyed on your axle? If so you
will increase under steer quite dramatically. Try driving just
one wheel & allow the unkeyed wheel to run free.
       Cheers Nick

It is particularly the 1.4 Pit bike wheels that seem to be a
little weak especially for rear axle applications, fronts don't
fail as often it seems. We have not collected enough data to say
anything about the Honda rims. There is some evidence that the
Honda spokes are subject to breakage on some of the more
enthusiastically driven karts but I have yet to see a Honda rim
       fail.
At your first CKGB meeting, if you are a new kart, we usually
put you out on the track first to test your kart and ensure that
you are happy with it, probably a better proving ground than a
street. A good proportion of the karts in CKGB are live axle so
       it should be fixable.

       Hi Nick
Yes I have both wheels keyed at the moment - I made that
decision but if it's a big problem I may have to revert back to
one wheel drive. I say a problem - it's not really because it's
great fun and a good laugh. The concern would be impeding other
karts going into the corner during an event. I haven't entered
yet so not sure how tight corners are or how fast other karts
corner so it's bit suck it and see at the moment. Presumably
there are other karts with 2 wheel drive ? How on earth do the
Frazer Nash boys go on !!
       Thanks for the reply
       regards
       Bri

       Thanks for that Jim -
watch this space as they say.

Out of interest Bri, have you got a photograph to share of your
Kart and, especially the front axle/steering gear. It may be
something we have come across before between us and that would
       help us to diagnose. ;D

Hi Bri, as an experiment I set up a 20 metre circle with traffic
cones ar Westonzoyland. With 1 wheel drive I could clip everyone
off them, with 2 wheel drive i couldn’t get near 1/2 of them. I
suspect a Frazer Nash may have a little more weight on the front
       axle.Cheers Nick

Hi Bri, hate to say this but I think your castor angle is off.
Can you post a picture sideways on of the front wheel & kingpin.

It is a thing of beauty Bri, a credit to you. Hope to see it
soon at an event. Other G.N style front suspension cars in the
club run high castor angles and a little toe in but looking at
yours with the reverse arc in the quarter elliptical springs I
doubt you would need as high.
6[sup]0[/sup] of castor is a starting point for most set ups but
often not enough for quarter ellipticals. Some of the club G.N's
are up to 12[sup]0[/sup] - That would probably be excessive for
       yours by eye.
